Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. –
Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) was brilliant for Missouri S&T in his final home game Saturday afternoon, but the Miners were unable to get a run across the plate for him in a
1-0, 10-inning loss in the second game of a doubleheader with Maryville University. The Saints completed the sweep of the twinbill with that win after taking an
8-2 decision in the opener.
Van Dyke gave up just six hits and struck out four in a 135-pitch, complete game effort. The senior righthander did not allow a hit from the fourth through the ninth innings, but the two hits that broke that run played a part in deciding the Great Lakes Valley Conference contest in the tenth.
The Miners narrowly missed winning the game for Van Dyke in the ninth, as pinch-hitter
Zach Siegel (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) hit a ball down the left field line that would have won the game, but it landed foul by inches. Maryville reliever Brandon Sarkissian eventually retired him to get out of the inning.
In the tenth, Kyle Kinyon led off with a single, then pinch-runner Troy Payton reached second on a sacrifice bunt attempt as the throw to second was low. Payton would steal third with one out, but Van Dyke got Mitch Carriger on a pop fly for the second out.
However, Brad Ridings – who had four hits in Saturday's doubleheader – slashed a hit to the opposite field to score Payton with the go-ahead run.
S&T got another scoring chance in the bottom of the inning, with runners on second and third with two outs, but Sarkissian induced a ground ball to end the contest.
The Miners had nine hits in game two, with
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) and
Matt Robaska (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) getting two apiece.
In game one, the Miners took a 2-0 lead in the opening inning as
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) singled with one out, stole second and came in to score on
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central)'s single when the ball was misplayed by leftfielder Sean Murphy. With two outs, the Miners added to the lead on an RBI single by
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney).
Maryville cut the S&T lead in half with a run in the third, then the Miners were an out away from retaining that one-run advantage in the fifth. But with two outs, a comebacker to S&T starter
Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) was bobbled, allowing Murphy to reach and keep the inning going.
Corey Gall followed with a hit to tie the game, then the Saints grabbed the lead when a wild pitch allowed Murphy to score.
Maryville added one more run in the inning and tacked on four more in the seventh to break the contest open.
The Miners had only five hits in the opener – and just two after the first inning – with Ulrich getting two of them.
Missouri S&T (18-27, 12-19 GLVC) will close its 2014 regular season schedule on the road with a four-game series next Saturday and Sunday at Missouri-St. Louis.
