1-0 and
10-4 on Friday evening in Kansas City, Mo.
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) tossed a two-hit shutout while
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) provided the offense in the opener. In the nightcap the Lady Miners (14-31, 9-23 GLVC) scored four runs on five hits in the opening inning and didn't look back on its way to sweeping the Hawks (19-27, 14-18) for the first time since 2010.
The opening game was scoreless until the third inning when
Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) worked a two-out walk and came around to score on Lawson's double to right center. The right fielder made a diving attempt on the ball, but it skipped past her and then skipped away towards center field allowing Imhoff to score from first. It was the only hit for S&T in the game.
That was all the run support Strope needed as she tossed her second straight complete game shutout and fifth shutout of the season to improve to 8-11. She allowed two hits while working around three walks and three errors in the contest. Rockhurst got the tying run to third in both the fifth and seventh innings.
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) started the second game with a single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East).
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) continued her hot hitting with a single back up the middle to score Davis and took second on the throw home. She came around to score on
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield)'s double to left. Two batters later Lawson singled to put runners on the corner with two outs.
Lawson stole second then
Kelsi O'Neill (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) found a hole on the left side of the infield to drive in both runs.
The Lady Miners added to their lead in the second. With two outs Slemp singled up the middle and Michaelis was hit-by-pitch. Baker drove them both home with a double to left center to make it 6-0. S&T had opportunities to add to their lead in the third and fourth innings but left runners in scoring position each frame.
Rockhurst got on the board in the home half of the fourth with a pair of solo home runs from Katelyn Bakey and Alex Jacobson. Bakey led off the inning with a shot down the left field line and then with two outs Jacobson hit one out to center. The Hawks continued to chip away at the Lady Miner advantage getting two more runs in the fifth on a groundout and a single to left.
S&T tacked on four insurance runs in the seventh. With one out Baker singled up the middle to start the rally.
Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) came into run for her and went to second as
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) reached on an error. Lawson grounded out to first to move both runners up. O'Neill then delivered a single to center to score Culbertson and Kruse to make it 8-4.
Olivia Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) came into run for O'Neill and scored on
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville)'s two-run homer to center. It was Fedorchak's first collegiate home run.
The Lady Miners banged out 13 hits in the second game led by Baker with three hits while Lawson and O'Neill added two hits apiece. Baker and O'Neill combined to drive in seven runs in the nightcap.
Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) got the start in game two allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out two in 3.2 innings of work.
