Missed opportunities prove costly as Lady Miners get swept by Wisconsin-Parkside

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – Some missed opportunities proved costly as the Missouri S&T Lady Miners were swept by the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers 4-1 and 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in Rolla. S&T struggled offensively and defensively getting only 10 hits and committing five errors.

S&T (11-30, 6-22 GLVC) had a chance to score in the first inning of game one. With one out Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) singled back up the middle and then stole second but was left stranded after a popup and a lineout ended the inning.

The Rangers (5-24, 5-18 GLVC) broke the scoreless tie in the third as their first two runners reached on a single and an error. Diana Gordon moved the runners over with a sacrifice and Kira Cooper grounded out to second scoring Lexi Sotiros from third for the first run of the contest.

The Lady Miners had a great chance to take the lead in the home half of the third. With one out Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) was hit by pitch and then Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) singled up the middle. Rizzo went to third and Davis ended up on second on the throw to third. Michaelis was then robbed of at least one RBI when her line drive was snared by the shortstop and then Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) grounded out to the pitcher to end the threat.

Parkside added to its lead in the fifth getting two-out two-run single back up the middle from Colleen Cummings to make it 3-0. The Rangers tacked on an insurance run in the sixth to make it 4-0.

S&T scored its only run of the day in the home half of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) which scored Davis from third. Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) was robbed of an RBI as well when her line drive was snagged by the shortstop.

The Lady Miners were outhit 9-4 in the opener and led by Davis who had two hits in the contest. Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) started the opener and went the first 4.2 innings allowing three runs, two earned, on hits with a strikeout and a walk. Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) went the rest of the way allowing an unearned run on five hits.

The Rangers scored the only run of the second game in the top of the second. With two outs Kirsten Luevano hit a ball off the top of the fence in left field for her fifth home run of the season. S&T had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the inning getting two on with two outs, but couldn't drive them in.

The Lady Miners had another chance in the third. Davis led the inning off with a double down the left field line and then was thrown out at third trying to advance on Michaelis's single to right. Michaelis went to second on the play but was left stranded. S&T wouldn't get another runner on base until the sxith inning. Slemp singled off the third baseman's glove with one out then with Baker at bat she was caught stealing for the second out. Baker followed that with a single to left center and Kruse reached on a dropped throw at first. Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) had a chance to tie the game but grounded out to short to end the inning.

The Lady Miners had one more shot in the seventh getting a lead-off single by Cassie Seaman (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny). The rally stalled as Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) grounded into a fielder's choice then Rizzo lined out to first and Davis was called out for interference, her bat struck a batted ball for the second time, to end the game.

S&T finished the nightcap with six hits and was led by Michaelis with two. Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) got the start and went the first 2.1 innings allowing a run on four hits and had a strikeout. Duncan went the final 4.1 innings allowing just three hits.

The Lady Miners conclude the home portion of their schedule this coming Tuesday when they host Drury in a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m.
