Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's seventh inning rally fell just short in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader with Drury, as the Panthers took a
3-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference win at the S&T Baseball Field. The Panthers went on to sweep the twinbill by winning
9-2 in the nightcap.
S&T trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh against Will Landsheft, who threw a no-hitter in his last appearance on the hill for Drury on Friday. Landsheft entered the game in the seventh and allowed back-to-back hits with one out to
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) and
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) to put runners at the corners.
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) hit into a fielder's choice to score Bodenstab to cut the lead to a run, then a wild pitch and an error followed.
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central), who reached on the error, stole second to put the winning run in scoring position, but
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) lined out to second to end the game.
The Miners took the initial lead in the game in the second as
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) singled, stole second and eventually scored on an infield hit off the bat of
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage). Drury tied it in the third on a sacrifice fly by Colton Jones, then took the lead two innings later on a two-run double by Nick Thimesch.
Bodenstab had two of the Miners' seven hits in the opener.
Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) fanned five in a 119-pitch complete game outing and held the league's top offensive team to four hits, but was hurt by five walks in the contest. The Miners also left 10 runners on base in game one, including the first when they loaded the bases but didn't score.
S&T scored the first run in game two as well when Brown opened the game with a hit and later came in to score on a wild pitch. But the Panthers took control of matters on the scoreboard after that, tying the game in the third on Emilio Villanueva's sacrifice fly and moving in front in the fourth on an RBI hit by Taylor Bax.
Drury scored twice in the fourth, then tacked on three in the seventh and three more in the ninth after the Miners put their other run on the board in the eighth on Ulrich's RBI single that scored
Tyler Schutt (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch).
Ryan Bearden (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood), the first of four pitchers used by S&T in game two, took the loss. Ulrich had two hits for the Miners, who were outhit 11-6 in the second contest.
The Miners will open a four-game series Friday at William Jewell with a noon doubleheader.
