Box Score 2 (Springfield, Mo.) – Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) drove in four runs which included a key bases clearing triple in the pivotal sixth inning of
7-3 win in the opener on Tuesday. The Lady Miners struggled to get their offense going in the nightcap as they lost
6-0.
After a scoreless first inning S&T (6-21, 3-13 GLVC) broke through in the second scoring three times. With one out and runners on first and second
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) reached on a throwing error to score
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) and sent
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) to third.
Cassie Rizzo (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves) made it 2-0 with a high chopper over the third baseman's head and down the left field line to plate Lawson.
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) then singled on a bunt to the catcher to load the bases. Michaelis drove in her first run on a slow roller to third which she beat out for an infield hit to score Badalamenti.
The Lady Miners still had the bases loaded with one out but
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) lined out to short and
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) lined out to left to end the inning.
The Panthers (8-24, 5-11 GLVC) scored an unearned run in the home half of the second to cut the deficit to 3-1 but left the tying runs on base.
Neither team scored again until the fifth when a throwing error by
Bethany Rader (Memphis, Mo./Scotland County ) with two outs allowed Carson Forge to score. Rader though overcame her mistake to strike out Becca McDonald to end the inning.
Jessica Kjeldgaard retired 10 out of 11 hitters heading into the sixth and retired the first two hitters in that frame. Badalamenti started a rally with a single to center then advanced to second on a single by Rizzo. Davis then reached on an infield single to load the bases. Michaelis promptly cleared them with a triple to the gap in right center to make it 6-2. S&T added its seventh run in the seventh when
Victoria Culbertson (Nevada, Mo./Nevada) scored on a wild pitch.
Drury added another run in the home half of the seventh for the final margin.
The Lady Miners banged out 12 hits in the opener and were led by Davis with three. Michaelis, Rizzo and
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) added two apiece. Rader earned her first collegiate win tossing a complete game allowing three runs, one earned, on eight hits. She struck out five and walked two in the contest.
In the nightcap S&T got back-to-back singles with one out in the first. Baker narrowly missed a home run hitting a deep fly ball to center to move the runners to second and third. A strikeout ended the inning.
Rader got the start in game two and loaded the bases in the first inning with two outs but was able to escape the jam with a grounder back to her. In the second inning she retired the first hitter before allowing back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases.
Morgan Imhoff (Jamestown, Mo./Jamestown) came in to try and get out of the jam, but allowed three runs to score.
The Lady Miners had a chance in the sixth getting two on with one out. Fedorchak was robbed of possible extra bases on a great catch by the right fielder and Lawson grounded out to short to end the threat.
The Panthers put the game away in the sixth sending nine batters to the plate and scored three times.
S&T was held to five hits in the nightcap with Michaelis and Baker combining for four of them. Rader took the loss allowing three runs on five hits in 2.0 innings of work. She walked two and didn't record a strikeout.
