Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team dropped back to the .500 mark in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Tuesday evening as it dropped both ends of a doubleheader to division leader Drury, losing
5-4 in the opener and
14-0 in game two.
The Panthers scored an unearned run in the eighth inning to pull out the tight affair in the first game, then scored three first inning runs in the second contest and never looked back to complete the sweep.
S&T took the initial lead in the first contest when
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) hit a sacrifice fly to score
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage), but the Panthers tied the game in the second on Cole Faulconer's two-out RBI single. The Miners regained the lead in the third after
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) singled to open the inning, moved to second on a wild pitch and eventually scoring on Brown's sacrifice fly.
Drury tied the game in the third and then took the lead with a two-out uprising in the fourth off Brown, who started the contest on the mound. After he retired the first two hitters in the fourth, Brown issued a two-out walk to Tyler Arthur, then gave up back-to-back hits to load the bases.
Blake Stephens (Chillicothe, Mo./Chillicothe) took over on the hill and gave up an infield single to Nick Thimesch; a throwing error that followed allowed a second run to score.
Stephens retired Caleb Cole to get out of the inning, then the Miners rallied with two in the fifth to knot the contest again.
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) started the inning with a hit and Bodenstab walked, then Ulrich moved to third when a wild throw on a pickoff attempt went into center field.
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei)'s ground ball scored Ulrich, then Brown singled into left and when the ball went by left fielder Emilio Villanueva, Bodenstab came home with the tying run.
From there, the contest turned into a dual of the bullpens as both teams were held scoreless into the eighth inning.
In Drury's eighth, Dallas Williams reached an error to start the frame, moved around to third on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly by Arthur, as the throw to the plate was a little up the third base line.
The Panthers outhit the Miners 12-7 in the opener, with Brown and
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) getting two hits apiece for S&T.
Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) was charged with the loss in relief.
In game two, Drury scored three in the first off starter
Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and added a single run in the second and three more in the third before busting the game wide open with a seven-run fifth.
The Panthers (16-7, 10-2 GLVC) had 14 hits to the Miners' six in game two.
Missouri S&T (12-15, 7-7 GLVC) will head to Quincy for a four-game series beginning with Saturday's noon doubleheader.
