Box Score 2 (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners swept its doubleheader against Southern Indiana winning the opener
1-0 in 13 innings and rallying for a
3-2 win in the nightcap. S&T was the visitor in both games despite playing on its home field because of the field conditions in Evansville. The nightcap was played through sleet over the final six innings.
The conference opener for both teams was a pitcher's duel between
Becca Strope (Glen Carbon, Ill./Edwardsville) and Brooke Harmening with the two pitchers throwing up zeroes for the first 12 innings. The Lady Miners (2-3, 2-0 GLVC) couldn't capitalize on a lead-off double in the third inning or a lead-off triple in the fourth inning.
In the seventh inning
Cailey Baker (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield) doubled with two outs but was left stranded. The Screaming Eagles (4-3, 0-2 GLVC) had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh putting runners at first and second with one out. Strope got Haley Hodges to ground into an inning ending double play when Baker stepped on third and fired to first to retire Hodges.
USI had another chance in the eighth inning. With one out Sadie Foster walked and went to second on a wild pitch but was left stranded after a strikeout and a ground out. The Eagles had another chance in the ninth. Kelsey Jankowski led off with a double to left field to start the inning. Harmening then grounded one to short, Jankowski ran into
Kyra Slemp (Roeland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission East) and was called out for interference for the first out. Grace Clark then singled through the left side to put runners at first and second with one out. Strope then retired Kyla Gogel on a pop up to third and got Hodges to ground out to
Andi Davis (Blue Springs, Mo./Archbishop O'Hara ) to end the inning.
In the 10
th inning USI put two on with two out but Jankowski lined out to Baker to end the threat then in the 11
th inning the Lady Miners turned another double play when Gogel lined out to Slemp and Clark was doubled off of first. S&T finally broke through in the 13
th. With one out
Lori Badalamenti (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland ) worked a walk, went to second on Davis's sacrifice and scored on
Shelby Michaelis (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf)'s double of the left field fence. In the bottom of the inning the Screaming Eagles got a leadoff walk before back-to-back groundouts. With two outs Harmening reached on an error to put the tying run in scoring position and the winning run on base. Strope struck out Clark looking on a 2-2 pitch to end the game.
The Lady Miners had nine hits in the opener led by Michaelis with three and
Savannah Fedorchak (Oakville, Mo./Oakville) had two. Strope went the distance allowing nine hits while striking out five and walking four. She threw 175 pitches of which 113 were for strikes to earn her first win of the season.
In the second game S&T struck first in the opening frame. Davis and Michaelis led off with back-to-back singles and were on second and third with no outs after a double steal. The Lady Miners nearly squandered the chance with a strike out and foul out but walks to
Dana Lawson (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) and Fedorchak plated Davis with the first run. The Screaming Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. MacKenzie Dorsam led-off with a home run off the scoreboard to tie the game and then Clark singled down the left field line to score Janna Green with the second run.
The game remained that way until the fifth. Michaelis led off with a bunt single then after a foul out went to second when Baker was hit by the pitch. Lawson flew out to right center, but Fedorchak picked her up with a single up the middle to score Michaelis.
S&T took the lead in the sixth.
Adrienne Kruse (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) opened the inning with a single to left and went to second on a sacrifice from Badalamenti. Davis then worked a walk and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Michaelis grounded into a fielder's choice as Kruse was tagged out at third for the second out. Slemp then walked on a 3-2 pitch to load the bases. With Baker down in the count 0-1 Jankowski uncorked a wild pitch to score Davis.
USI got the tying run on base in the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to get the runner home with the game ending with a double play.
The Lady Miners outhit the Screaming Eagles 8-7 in the nightcap. Michaelis and Davis paced the offense with two hits apiece while Fedorchak drove in both runs.
Amber Duncan (Centralia, Mo./Centralia) went the distance allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out four and walking one to improve her record to 1-2.
