Miners fall to Parkside in 10 innings in opener, game two postponed

3/8/2014 5:10:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T was its own worst enemy Saturday, as it allowed five unearned runs in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader with Wisconsin-Parkside that it dropped 7-6 in 10 innings on cold, rainy afternoon at the S&T Baseball Field.

The second game was postponed due to rain and the teams will play a doubleheader Sunday at noon to wrap up the weekend series.

The Miners had rallied from a 3-0 deficit and took a 5-3 lead in the fifth on Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland)'s bases clearing triple. However, S&T surrendered two unearned runs after retiring the first two hitters in the inning to allow the Rangers to tie the game, then gave up two in the tenth on a two-out error.

Wisconsin-Parkside took the initial lead in the game in the fourth when it scored three times. The first two runs scored on a hit by D.J. Peltz, then Pat Cottrell's triple later in the inning made it 3-0.

S&T cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning as Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) drew a one-out walk and Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) reached on an error. With two outs, Brower reached base on a passed ball after striking out to load the bases, then Luke Wetzler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) reached on an infield single as third baseman Trent Muscat made a diving stop on the play, but was unable to record an out.

Starting pitcher John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) retired the first two hitters in the sixth and struck out Cottrell, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach. Muscat followed with a hit and Kris Zarek got an infield single that shortstop Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) stopped behind second – but threw wild to third after Cottrell overran the bag which allowed him to score.

Zach Cunningham followed with another infield single that Richter stopped on the edge of the outfield grass, but Muscat came around to score on the play to tie the contest at five.

The Miners had scoring chances in the eighth and ninth innings. Wetzler doubled with one out in the eighth but was stranded at third, then Karbowski singled with two outs in the ninth and ended up at second after an error, but was left there as well.

UW-Parkside loaded the bases in the tenth with a one-out walk, followed by a walk and an infield hit with two outs, then Cunningham reached on the error by Lockett at second that allowed two runs to cross the plate.

The Miners cut the lead in half in their half of the tenth when Brower tripled again with one out and scored on a hit by Matt Robaska (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South). S&T had runners at first and second with one out and had the runners going on a 1-1 pitch to Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman), but he lined out to first baseman Juan Bowers for a game-ending double play.

The Rangers outhit the Miners 12-7 for the game, with Brower and Wetzler getting two hits apiece for S&T. Four Miner pitchers recorded nine strikeouts in the contest; Jacob Hinton (Westmoreland, Tenn./Westmoreland) was tagged with the loss in relief.

Missouri S&T to 4-7 with Saturday's loss, while the Rangers won for the first time in five outings.
