Miners to entertain Rangers in four-game weekend series

3/7/2014 11:45:00 AM

ROLLA, Mo. – Fresh off a victory Wednesday over previously undefeated Missouri Southern, Missouri S&T's baseball team will return to action this weekend when it hosts Wisconsin-Parkside in a four-game series at the S&T Baseball Field.

The series – designated as a non-conference series between the two foes from the Great Lakes Valley Conference – begins with a noon doubleheader Saturday. The teams will play twice more on Sunday with that start time also at noon.

Missouri S&T comes into the weekend with a 4-6 record after snapping a four-game losing streak with Wednesday's win over the Lions. The Miners are hitting .251 as a team coming into Saturday's twinbill with three hitters batting over .300, led by first baseman Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) at .424. Portwood also shares the team lead in runs batted in with third baseman Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) with six apiece.

Infielder Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) is hitting .308 on the year and centerfielder Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) comes in with a .306 batting average.

John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South), who got the win in relief Wednesday, has two of the Miners' four wins on the mound and has thrown a team-high 16 1/3 innings on the season.

Wisconsin-Parkside opened its season two weeks ago by dropping all four games of a series to Barry in Florida, the only games it has been able to play thus far in the 2014 campaign. The Rangers hit .272 in those contests, but allowed 47 earned runs in the four outings.

Catcher Kris Zarke hit .500 and drove in four runs for the Rangers in the series at Barry, while first baseman Juan Bowers hit .455 and infielder Zach Thompson batted .429 during the four-game set.

The Rangers have won nine of the previous 16 meetings in the history of the series, but S&T has won five of the last six matchups, including a doubleheader sweep in Kenosha, Wis., in the last meeting between the teams in 2012.
