Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's baseball team rebounded from a tough weekend series against nationally-ranked St. Cloud State by handing Missouri Southern its first loss of the season Wednesday afternoon, knocking off the Lions
6-5 at the S&T Baseball Field.
Twice, the Lions rallied from a deficit to tie S&T, but the Miners regained the lead on both occasions in their next at-bat and then set MSSU down in order in each of the final two innings to improve to 4-6 on the year. Missouri Southern had won its first 12 games of the season and was ranked 14
th in the NCBWA rankings this week.
The Miners scored in the opening inning when
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman) drew a leadoff walk, stole second and went to third on a ground out by
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe), then came in to score on a wild pitch.
S&T would extend its lead to 3-0 in the second with a two-out rally that began with a walk to
Zach Siegel (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview). After Siegel stole second,
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) singled to move him to third and
Luke Wetzler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) reached on an infield single to score him. The Miners scored their second run of the inning on an RBI single off the bat of
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage).
The Lions knotted the score in the third on a bases loaded triple off the bat of Logan Moon, but the Miners would take the lead right back in the bottom of the inning as Brower delivered a two-run single to score
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central), who had reached on an error to begin the frame and
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland), who followed with a single.
Southern cut the lead in half on an RBI single by Moon in the fifth, then tied the game in the seventh on an RBI ground out off the bat of Robbe Ewing.
But in the bottom half of the inning, Portwood greeted reliever Nathan Strobel with a leadoff single, then moved around to third on an infield single by Karbowski and a sacrifice bunt.
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) followed by hitting a ground ball to second that allowed Portwood to cross the plate with the go-ahead run.
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South), the winning pitcher in relief, retired the Lions in order in the eighth and Brown did likewise in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Micah Dohlen (Kent, Wash./Kent Lake) got the start for the Miners and allowed five hits and struck out three in his five innings of work.
Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) threw a scoreless sixth before turning the game over to Auble in the seventh.
The Miners outhit the Lions 8-7, with Brower leading the way with two hits.
Missouri S&T will host Wisconsin-Parkside in a four-game non-conference series this weekend, beginning with a noon doubleheader on Saturday at the S&T Baseball Field.
