Miners' late game one outburst leads to sweep over Knights

3/22/2014 8:47:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – Rattling off 28 hits over the course of Saturday's doubleheader, Missouri S&T's baseball team picked up a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference wins over Bellarmine at the S&T Baseball Field by scores of 8-7 and 5-2 and evened up its conference record in the process.

The Miners overcame a pair of Bellarmine leads in the opener and scored five times in the eighth inning – and held off a Knight comeback effort in the ninth to win the opener, then rode a 12-hit attack and a solid pitching performance from Aaron Bedsworth (New Bloomfield, Mo./New Bloomfield) in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

After the Knights scored twice in the opening inning of game one, the Miners came back with three in the third to move in front.  Brett Yasui (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamahameha) opened the inning with a hit, then following a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman), Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) singled into center.  Yasui was held at third, but the throw from the outfield sailed over the head of the cutoff man and went past the catcher, allowing Yasui to score.

Brown ended up at second and scored moments later on a double by Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe)Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) followed that with a double past third that scored Portwood with the go-ahead run.

The Knights went back into the lead in the fifth when they scored twice, added another run in the sixth on a wild throw on a stolen base attempt and carried that two-run lead into the eighth before the Miners broke loose.

Karbowski stated things off with a triple to the fence in left center and came in to score on a wild pitch.  Ethan Krenning (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) follows with, then Matt Reschke (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), while at the plate to bunt, was hit by a pitch.  Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei) slashed a single into right to load the bases and prompt a pitching change for the Knights.

Yasui worked a full count on reliever Will Birch, then drew a walk to force home the tying run.  Then with one out, Brown hit a sacrifice fly that scored pinch-runner Tyler Schutt (Katy, Texas/Cinco Ranch) with the go-ahead run and Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) followed that with a two-run single to give the Miners a three-run lead to take to the ninth.

Brown took over on the mound and was tagged for two runs before fanning Austin Crutcher with the bases loaded to end the contest.

Tom Laudadio (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East), who pitched the eighth in relief of starter John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South), picked up the win and Brown was credited with his fourth save.  Brown also had four hits at the plate in the Miners' 16-hit attack in game one; six others had two hits apiece for S&T.

In game two, Bellarmine scored in the second when Anthony Baker tripled and came in on a balk by Bedsworth, but wouldn't get another hit off the S&T lefty until the sixth inning.  In the meantime, the Miners plated three runs in the second – with only two balls leaving the infield – and two more in the fourth.

The second inning rally started with a leadoff hit by Karbowski, followed by back-to-back bunt singles by Krenning and Reschke.  Richter reached on an infield single to score Karbowski, then Luke Wetzler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) dropped down a successful squeeze bunt to put the Miners into the lead.

After the squeeze play, Bodenstab singled through the hole on the left side to bring home Reschke with the third run of the inning.

In the fourth, the Miners got consecutive hits from Wetzler, Bodenstab and Brown, the last of them bringing home the two runners to give S&T a 5-1 lead.

The Knights got a run off Bedsworth in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Crutcher before he turned the game over to Jacob Hinton (Westmoreland, Tenn./Westmoreland) for a four-out save, which he completed with a pair of strikeouts in the seventh.

The Miners outhit Bellarmine 12-6 in the nightcap as Bodenstab, Lockett and Richter all had two hits apiece.  Bedsworth allowed only four hits and struck out four in his 5 2/3 innings of work.

S&T, who improved to 8-11 and 3-3 in the GLVC, will face the Knights (6-9, 1-5 GLVC) in another doubleheader Sunday starting at noon.
