Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – Missouri S&T's first foray into Great Lakes Valley Conference this season did not go as hoped, as the Miners were swept in a doubleheader by Illinois Springfield by scores of
6-1 and
6-2 Saturday afternoon.
The Miners fell behind right away in the opener, then grabbed an early lead in the nightcap only to see the Prairie Stars rally with runs in each of the last four innings to complete the sweep.
UIS scored three times in the first of game one off Miner starter
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South), knocking him around for five straight hits after he retired the first hitter of the contest.
Jared Massengill's RBI double got the Prairie Stars on the scoreboard; he was thrown out at third on the play for the second out of the inning. However, a hit by Adam Unes was followed by an RBI double off the bat of Luke Stewart and an run-scoring hit by Alex Bradley to give UIS its early 3-0 advantage.
The Prairie Stars added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings, while the Miners got their only tally in the seventh inning on a leadoff single by
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland), a wild pitch and an RBI single by
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman). However, S&T would end up leaving 10 runners on base in the contest, including two in the third after starting that inning with back-to-back hits.
Bodenstab and
Luke Wetzler (Waterloo, Ill./Waterloo) had two hits apiece for the Miners, who had nine hits in the opener as did UIS.
Game two started out better for the Miners as they grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second.
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) reached on an error with one out and following a sacrifice bunt, scored on
Brett Yasui (Mililani, Hawaii/Kamahameha)'s hit.
Zach Siegel (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) followed with a double down the line in left to score Yasui from first.
The Prairie Stars cut into the advantage in the third on a sacrifice fly by Stewart, then loaded the bases against Miner starter
Eric Van Dyke (Longmont, Colo./Silver Creek) with one out. A passed ball brought home the tying run, then took the lead on a single by Massengill that ended the day for Van Dyke.
UIS scored another run before the inning ended on a fielder's choice, then tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth. The Miners had scoring chances in the fifth and seventh innings, but stranded two runners in each of those frames and left seven for the contest.
S&T was outhit 11-7 as Bodenstab and
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) had two hits apiece.
The scheduled doubleheader between the Miners and Prairie Stars for Sunday has been postponed due to the pending winter weather heading into the region overnight. The teams will play the twinbill Monday at UIS beginning at noon.
