Box Score JACKSONVILLE, Ark. – Missouri S&T rallied from a four-run deficit in the fifth inning to tie 24
th-ranked St. Cloud State Friday evening, but allowed three runs in the top of the seventh and dropped the opening game of the four-game series by the score of
9-6.
The Huskies held a 4-0 lead in the eighth inning of the nightcap before the game was suspended due to a power outage at Jacksonville City Park. The teams will complete that game prior to Saturday's 1 p.m. twinbill that will complete the series.
S&T grabbed the early lead Friday with a two-out rally, as
Lance Portwood (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Santa Fe) singled and ended up scoring on
Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage)'s RBI single. St. Cloud State scored single runs in the second and third innings to take the lead before the Miners knotted the score at two in the fourth.
Trevor Karbowski (Standish, Mich./Sterling Central) led off the inning with a hit, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came in to score on
Matt Robaska (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South)'s hit.
The Huskies put four on the board in the fifth, opening the inning with three straight hits off S&T starter
John Auble (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) to take a 4-2 lead on Mike Jurgella's RBI single. An error extended the inning and allowed SCSU to plate two more before it ended, which came home on Kyle Lieser's two-run single with two outs.
S&T answered that with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning, which began with consecutive walks to
Tyler Bodenstab (Independence, Mo./Truman),
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) and Portwood. Karbowski singled home Bodenstab for the first run of the inning, then Brown reached on an infield single to score Lockett; a throwing error on the play allowed Portwood to score as well.
Later in the inning, the Miners tied the score on an infield single off the bat of
Adam Richter (Breese, Ill./Mater Dei).
With the game still tied heading into the seventh, the Huskies grabbed the lead on a two-out double by Eric Loxtercamp and added to their lead when Garrett Fischer followed with a two-run single.
St. Cloud State outhit the Miners 14-7 in the contest, as Karbowski and Brown had two hits apiece.
