Lady Miners can’t slow down seventh-ranked Drury in regular season finale

Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners couldn't contain the hot-shooting seventh ranked Drury Lady Panthers in a 91-54 defeat on Thursday evening in Rolla. The Lady Panthers shot a blistering 63 percent from the floor (39-for-62) and outscored the Lady Miners 54 to 18 in points in the paint.

S&T (9-17, 5-13 GLVC) opened the scoring with a three-pointer from Senait McLeod (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef), but Drury (24-2, 16-2 GLVC) countered with six straight points from Sanayika Shields to grab the lead. McLeod and Shields traded baskets before Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) tied the game with a three-pointer with 14:32 left in the half.

The Lady Panthers broke the tie on a jumper by Bethanie Funderburk igniting an 18-0 run that spanned five minutes. S&T missed six shots in that span as it was held without a point until Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School)'s layup with 8:51 to go. Drury then ran off 13 straight points to build a 29-point lead with 4:14 left in the half.

The Lady Miners went into the locker room trailing 51-18 after a layup by Amber Dvorak right before the buzzer.

The Lady Panthers were 19 for 28 (73.3 percent) from the field in the frame and led in scoring by Funderburk with 17 while Shields added 10 and Kylie Williamson chipped in with nine.

S&T shot 26 percent (8 of 31) from the field in the opening stanza and was 2 for 4 from beyond the arc. McLeod and Knar combined to score 12 points.

Drury continued to control the contest extending their lead to as many as 44 points with less than 10 minutes to play. S&T had no answer for Amber Dvorak in the second half as she scored 16 points and was 8 of 10 from the field.

The Lady Panthers cooled off a little in the second half shooting just 59 percent (20 for 34) from the field while outrebounding the Lady Miners 20 to 12. Funderburk led four Drury players in double figures with 23 points. Dvorak finished with 22 while Shields added 18 and Kylie Williamson had 11. Annie Armstrong dished out eight assists.

S&T was 10 for 26 in the frame (39 percent) from the field. After not attempting a free throw in the first 20 minutes the Lady Miners went to the foul line 16 times in the second 20 minutes and made 14 of them.  

McLeod led S&T in scoring with 14 points while Knar dropped in 13 and Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) finished with 10. Sample and Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) had a team-high six rebounds each. It was the final home game for seniors: McLeod, Knar, Sample, Cooper and Erica Askew (Chicago, Ill./Morgan Park).

The Lady Miners will travel to Evansville, Ind., on Sunday to square with Southern Indiana in the first round of the GLVC Tournament at 1 p.m. S&T received the 11th seed in the tournament while the Screaming Eagles earned the sixth seed.
