ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners let a late lead slip away in an
85-81 overtime loss to College of the Ozarks on Saturday night in Rolla. The loss was the fourth in a row for S&T dropping them to 3-4 on the season.
The Lady Miners led 74-71 with 0:43 left in regulation when
Demetria Snaden (Evansville, Ind./Evansville North) was fouled and went to the line for the front end of a one-and-one. She missed the free throw, but
Brittany Andersen (Saint John, Ind./Andrean ) came away with the rebound and kicked it out to
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) who was fouled with 0:39 left. Arand missed both free throws leaving the door open for the Lady Bobcats (6-4). Kayla Kepler made S&T pay hitting a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 0:27 left to tie the game.
The Lady Miners had a chance to win the game, but
Linda Pagrode (Jaunolaine, Latvia/Riga 99)'s runner with 0:06 left was off the mark and Tanner Merriam got the rebound. After a timeout, College of the Ozarks fired off a shot from just inside half court at the buzzer but it was off the mark forcing the extra frame.
Both sides turned the ball over on their opening possession in the extra period. Pagrode gave S&T the lead hitting a driving layup only to watch the Lady Bobcats take the lead on the ensuing possession on a 3-pointer from Brandy Uchtman. Uchtman had the hot hand in the overtime frame scoring C of O's first seven points.
Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) tied the game with a 3-pointer in the left corner with 2:41 to play, but Uchtman countered with another bucket to put the Lady Bobcats back in front 81-79 with 2:24 remaining.
Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) tied the game back up following her own missed shot and put it in with 1:58 to go.
College of the Ozarks had two cracks to take the lead but missed both shots and
Jamy Douvier (Sedgwick, Kan./Sunrise Christian Academy) came away with the rebound giving S&T a chance to retake the lead. Arand missed a jumper as Uchtman came away with the rebound.
Greenwood fouled Kepler on a drive to the basket and Kepler hit both free throws to put the Lady Bobcats ahead for good 83-81 with 0:25 remaining. The Lady Miners had a chance to tie the game but Douvier's layup was off the mark and Merriman came away with the rebound. S&T was forced to foul and fouled Kepler who hit two more from the line to ice the game with 0:06 left.
The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 45.3 percent (29-for-64) from the field, made a season-high eight 3-pointers and shot a season best 61.5 percent from beyond the arc, but made only 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) at the foul line and turned it over 21 times.
Andersen led S&T with a career-high 20 points and was one of three players in double figures. Kesper added a career best 16 while Arand finished with 10.
Kimberly Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) added eight points off the bench too. Andersen also had eight rebounds while Douvier dished out five assists.
College of the Ozarks finished the game shooting 47 percent (31-for-66) from the floor, was 4-of-14 from beyond the arc and made 83 percent of its free throw attempts. Hannah Wisdom had a game-high 25 points to lead four Lady Bobcats in double figures. Uchtman added 18 while Kepler and Merriman had 16 each. Uchtman also had a game-high nine rebounds.
The Lady Miners return to action next Wednesday hosting Southwest Baptist at 7 p.m.
