Lady Miners drop double overtime heartbreaker to Southwest Baptist 81-78

ROLLA, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners dropped its fifth straight contest in heartbreaking fashion losing in double overtime to Southwest Baptist 81-78 at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building on Wednesday evening. The Lady Miners led the contest for 40:17, but were unable to close it out as the Bearcats picked up their 16th straight win in the series.

S&T (3-5) opened the game on a 19-3 run in the first nine minutes while holding Southwest Baptist to just 1-of-13 shooting from the field. The Bearcats began clawing their way back closing to within 25-16 on a layup by Megan Rosenbohm with 5:07 left in the half.

After the Lady Miners extended its lead back to 13, SBU finished the half on a 13-4 run to get within four at the intermission.

S&T held a five-point advantage for a majority of the second half, but were unable to break away from SBU eventually tying the game with 2:17 to go in regulation. Lucy hit the first of two free throws but the Lady Miners couldn't get the rebound as Ashlee Pitts hit a 3-pointer to tie the game. On the ensuing possession Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) was fouled and she hit both free throws to put S&T back in front.

After a defensive stop Greenwood was fouled again with 1:29 left. She sank both free throws to push the lead back to four. The Lady Miners were whistled for a foul on the next possession sending Leann Terrill to the line where she made both free throws. After a timeout the Lady Miners had a chance to stretch the lead back to four, but Leigh-Ann Kesper (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville)'s jumper with the shot clock winding down was short and SBU came away with the rebound.

After another timeout Sarah Magana drove to the hoop, missed her shot but got her own rebound with 0:17 to play. After another timeout Dilonna Johnson drove to the basket got fouled and was injured on the play. Rosenbohm came off the bench hitting two free throws to tie the game with 0:05 to go.

S&T couldn't get off a shot in time sending the game into overtime for the second straight contest.

SBU scored the first four points of the overtime period before Elsie Greenwood (Breckenridge, Mo./Penney High School) hit a 3-pointer bringing the Lady Miners to within 63-62. The Bearcats countered with a layup by Brook Duncan to push the lead back to three, but Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) answered with another triple to even the game at the 2:39 mark.

SBU answered again scoring four straight points to push the lead back to 69-65 with less than two minutes to play. Snaden made 1-of-2 at the foul line to make it a one possession game and after a stop Arand hit her second trey of the extra session to tie the game with 1:06 left.

The Lady Miners held the Bearcats without a bucket and had a chance to play for the final shot, but Bland turned it over with 0:09 left. SBU had two chances to win the game. Rosenbohm missed, but Duncan got the rebound and her shot at the buzzer was short sending the game into a second overtime.

Arand put S&T ahead 0:10 into the second extra session hitting a layup off the tip. Arand then stole the ball and had a chance to make it a four-point game but her layup was blocked. After a pair of free throws tied it J. Douvier gave the Lady Miners the lead back on a jumper in the paint and an Arand free throw made it 74-71 with 3:25 left.

S&T continued to lead until the 2:18 mark when Magana hit a three after another offensive rebound to put the Bearcats back in front 78-76. It didn't stay that way for long as Kimberly Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) answered on the other end putting home a layup to even the game at 78 with 1:39 remaining.

The Lady Miners didn't get back defensively and it cost them as Rosenbohm hit a layup to make it 80-78 only 0:08 later. S&T had a couple of cracks on its next possession, but Arand missed a three and Bland couldn't put in the rebound with 1:00 to play.

The Bearcats made it 81-78 as Duncan hit the first of two free throws with 0:46 to go. On the ensuing trip Snaden tried to close the deficit to one but her shot was off target. Forced to foul S&T sent Magana to the line where she missed both free throws with 0:19 left. The Lady Miners got the rebound and called timeout with 0:09 remaining.

Out of the timeout S&T found Arand for a good look at a three, but her shot was off the mark and Duncan came away with the rebound as time expired.

The Lady Miners finished the game shooting 41 percent (29-for-70) from the field, was 7-of-20 from beyond the arc and made 81 percent of its free throws. Arand led S&T with a career-high 16 points and was one of three Lady Miners in double figures. Snaden and Runge added 10 each while J. Douvier finished with nine.

SBU shot only 29.6 (24-of-81) from the field, was 8-for-25 from three and shot 76 percent at the charity stripe (25-of-33). It outrebounded S&T 52-to-51 and had 23 boards on the offensive end resulting in 26 second chance points. The Bearcats outscored the Lady Miners 26-13 in second chance points and by 12 points at the free throw line. SBU had four players finish in double figures led by Duncan and Rosenbohm with 14 each while Johnson had 12 and Lucy added 11.

S&T plays its final game of the 2014 calendar year on Saturday afternoon hosting Culver-Stockton in a 1 p.m. contest at the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building.
