ROLLA, Mo. – After getting out of the gate in good shape Saturday night, Missouri S&T's men's basketball team fell victim to a rough shooting night and a slew of turnovers, leading to a
79-63 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss to 14
th-ranked Drury at Billy Key Court.
The Miners held the lead for the first six minutes of play, but once the Panthers went in front on a Drew Moore three-point basket at the 12:51 mark, Drury held the lead for the remainder of the contest as it held S&T to 40 percent shooting from the floor and forced the Miners into 26 turnovers.
S&T took a 5-2 lead on a basket by
Zach Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) with 17:29 left in the first half, but didn't score again for over four minutes when it tied the game on a lay-in by
B.J. McLaughlin (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central). Drury got the three-pointer from Moore on its next trip down the floor, then held the Miners scoreless for another three-plus minutes as it built an eight-point advantage.
The Miners were within four at 22-18 following another basket by McLaughlin, before the Panthers outscored S&T 15-7 to take their largest lead of the first half at 37-25. Much of the damage was done by Kameron Bundy – the game's leading scorer with 26 points – who scored eight of those points in that stretch.
Drury would lead by nine at halftime, then built the advantage to as many as 20 points in the second half. Bundy hit a three-pointer on Drury's first possession of the half to make it a 12-point game and the Miners never cut the lead within 10 after that.
Missouri S&T shot just 36.8 percent in the second half and 40 percent for the game as it saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.
Desmond Buerge (Carthage, Mo./Carthage) led S&T with 14 points, while
Zach Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) was also in double figures with 12. The Miners outrebounded the Panthers 34-28, led by
Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School)'s nine, but were done in by the turnovers that the Panthers converted into 23 points.
Cameron Adams also had 21 points for Drury (6-1, 1-0 GLVC), who won for the 36
th time in its last 40 conference contests with Saturday's victory.
The Miners (5-2, 0-1 GLVC) will host Trevecca Nazarene Friday in a 7 p.m. contest at Billy Key Court.
