ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's volleyball team takes its four match winning streak back on the road this weekend heading to Kansas City to take on Rockhurst and William Jewell. The Miners will square off against the Hawks on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then face the Cardinals on Saturday at 5 p.m.
S&T has at least clinched a wild card spot but can clinch an automatic berth to the GLVC Tournament with a win and a Missouri-St. Louis loss on Friday. It could also clinch with a win at William Jewell on Saturday and a Triton loss at Truman State.
The Miners (16-11, 11-5 GLVC) look to build off a 3-0 last week that saw them overcome a pair of deficits to win a couple of five set thrillers at Drury and Wisconsin-Parkside. In the later of the two matches S&T trailed 2-0 and was a point away from getting swept before rallying to stun the Rangers in five. The Miners then traveled down to Romeoville and grounded the Lewis attack with an impressive 3-1 victory behind a great defensive effort by S&T. The Flyers came into that match with a hitting percentage of .254, but were held to their fourth lowest attack percentage of the season by the Miner defense.
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) led the defensive effort with 26 digs in the match and finished with 69 digs for the week to earn GLVC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Rockhurst (23-3, 14-2 GLVC) enters play this week having won six straight and 11 of their last 12. The Hawks currently sit second in the conference standings but could jump into first with two wins and pair of losses by Truman State. Rockhurst defeated S&T 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-16) in Rolla back on Sept. 27.
The Hawks went 3-0 on the road last week sandwiching a pair of sweeps against William Jewell and Illinois Springfield around a five set win at McKendree last Saturday. Rockhurst leads the GLVC in attack percentage (.266), opponent hitting percentage (.148), assists (13.14/set), blocks with 2.47 per set and are second in the league in kills with 14.02/set. Preecy Seever leads the GLVC in hitting percentage at .400 percent, is second in blocks with 1.29 per set and eighth in kills averaging 3.12/set. Morgan Rietzke, the reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Week, is seventh in the league averaging 3.20 kills/set while Whitney Kostal leads the league in assists with 11.67 per set.
The Miners close out the regular season on Saturday with a visit to William Jewell. The Cardinals enter Friday's contest with Drury having lost eight straight and are just 1-8 at home this season. WJC has won just three sets in its eight match losing streak. S&T swept the Cardinals 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-20) on Sept. 26 in Rolla.
As a team William Jewell has an attack percentage of .125 for the year and is averaging 10.2 kills/set. Christina Pratt leads the Cardinal attack with 2.28 kills per set while Lauren Holm and Kelsey Wagner are averaging 1.62 and 1.53 kills/set respectively. Amy Lindhorst is distributing an average of 5.86 assists/set while Lesley Iron leads the way on the defensive side of the ball with 4.20 digs per set.
