EAST PEORIA, Ill. – Missouri S&T's upset bid came up a set short as the Miners fell to 25
th ranked Truman State
3-2 (15-25, 25-19, 25-21, 19-25, 8-15) on Friday evening in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill.
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) finished with a career-high 22 kills to lead S&T.
The opening set was all Bulldogs (27-3) as they raced out to a 6-1 lead to start the match. The Miners (18-13) cut the deficit to 9-4, but couldn't get any closer than five points the rest of the set. Truman led by as many as 11 points on two different occasions in the frame and eventually on by 10 points. The Bulldogs recorded 21 kills against one error in the opening set and had a hitting percentage of .444.
The second set was a complete reversal of the opener as S&T scored the first three points and eight of the first nine points. The Miners led by as many as 11 points in the frame. Truman fought their way back closing to 19-16 on a kill by Ali Patterson, but S&T answered scoring five of the last eight points to win 25-19 and even the match at a set apiece.
The Miners kept the momentum going scoring six of the first eight points in the third set and eventually stretched out to a seven-point lead. The Bulldogs began to claw their way back and tied it at 18 on an error by
Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa). After an S&T timeout the Miners scored six of the next seven points to get to set point on a kill from
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ). The Bulldogs fought off the first two set points before Zellmer finished it off with a kill to give S&T a 2-1 advantage.
The fourth set saw six ties and a pair of lead changes as it went back-and-forth. Truman broke through to take a 15-11 lead only to see the Miners come back and tie it at 17 on a kill by
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South). The Bulldogs ended the set by scoring eight of the final 10 points to win 25-19 and even the match at 2 sets each.
Truman used a 5-1 run to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth set to take control. S&T got as close as 7-5 but the Bulldogs were too tough down the stretch outscoring the Miners 8-3 the rest of the way to win the set 15-8 and take the match.
S&T finished the contest with 67 kills but committed 13 more errors than Truman and had 14 more attacks than the Bulldogs. The Miners finished the match with a hitting percentage of .193. Moon was one of three S&T players in double figures and was joined by Haslag with 13 kills and Zellmer contributed 12 kills to the attack.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) had 53 assists while
Jackie Pyles (White Lake, Mich./West Bloomfield) had 29 digs.
Truman was led by Allie Brak with 25 kills while Abby Heise added 10 kills. Meghan Zimmerman passed out 57 assists and Abby Moser finished with 28 digs. The Bulldogs recorded an attack percentage of .271 (66k/15e/188ta).
S&T will learn its NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday evening at 9 p.m. There will be a watch party held in the Hall of Fame room of the Bullman Multi-Purpose Building beginning at 8:30 p.m.
