Miners storm back to defeat Rangers 3-2

SOMERS, Wis. – How quickly things can change? After dropping the first two sets Missouri S&T was on the verge of being swept trailing 24-22, but scored the final four points of that frame and then dominated the final two sets to grab a thrilling 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-15, 15-9) win at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday evening. It was the Miners first win in three tries over the Rangers at Parkside and it's just the second time in school history they've rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win a match.

S&T (15-11, 10-5 GLVC) struggled to get its offense going in the first two sets on Saturday hitting just .144 percent recording 25 kills against 12 errors in 90 chances. The Rangers (14-11, 7-8 GLVC) on the other hand hit 14 points better recording nine more kills and three fewer errors in 88 attacks to take the 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Parkside continued its strong play in the third set scoring five of the first seven points in the frame. The Miners climbed their way back into the set getting to within 12-11 only to watch the Rangers run off straight to take a 17-11 advantage. They continued to hold a five-point lead until S&T began to chip away at the margin with a 6-2 run to close within 22-21 on a kill by Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa). The two sides traded the next two points with Parkside holding two match points. Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) started the Miners run with a kill and then a Ranger error evened the set at 24. Moon gave S&T its first lead of the set on a kill and then Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) ended it with a kill on the next point to keep the Miners alive.

If S&T had any momentum with that rally in the third set then it didn't transfer to the start of the fourth set as Parkside stormed out to an early lead. The Miners weathered the storm though and began to climb back eventually tying it at 9 on back-to-back kills from Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ). S&T then began to take control of the match with a 9-3 run to take an 18-13 lead and the Rangers wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the way as the Miners evened the match with a 25-15 win.

In the deciding set S&T flipped the tables on Parkside with a quick start to grab the early lead and wouldn't let it go. The Rangers closed to within 6-5 only to see the Miners answer with a 6-1 run to extend the lead to 12-6 after a Parkside error. S&T wouldn't allow the Rangers to get closer than five points the rest of the set as Zellmer ended the match with her 11th kill.

After their slow start in the first two sets the Miners picked it up over the final three frames hitting .336 and finished the match with an attack percentage of .246 (66 kills/19 errors/191 attempts). Haslag and Mueller led four players in double figures with 13 kills each. Moon and Zellmer had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) had 40 assists while Jackie Pyles (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) finished with 20 digs.

Parkside finished the match with 64 kills against 22 errors in 200 chances and had a hitting percentage of .210. Jackie Langer and Rebecca Roembke had 16 kills each while Lexi Turek finished with 10 kills. Megan Pekarek had a match-high 53 assists and Roembke and Meghan Conley had 18 digs apiece.

S&T continues its five match road trip on Sunday heading to Romeoville, Ill., to take on Lewis University at 1 p.m.
