Miners bounce back with sweep at Maryville

(St. Louis, Mo.) – After a tough loss on Friday night the Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team bounced back in a big with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-16, 25-15) over Maryville on Saturday afternoon at the Moloney Arena in St. Louis, Mo.

The Miners (9-7, 6-3 GLVC) and Saints (8-7, 4-5 GLVC) went back-and-forth to open the match and were tied at 10 before S&T gained some separation scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 17-11 lead forcing Maryville to use both of its timeouts to try and stop the run.

The Miners though had a tough time putting the Saints away as they rallied to even the frame at 23 on a kill from Laura Welling forcing S&T to call its second timeout of the frame. After the timeout, Maryville committed back-to-back attack errors allowing the Miners to hang on for a 25-23 win.

S&T led from start to finish in the second stanza racing out to an early 3-0 lead and wouldn't look back. The Saints eventually closed to within a point at 14-13, but the Miners were strong down the stretch outscoring Maryville 11-3 the rest of the way to take the commanding 2-0 lead.

S&T continued its strong play opening the third set with a 5-2 lead. The Saints climbed back into it with three straight points before the Miners pulled away scoring five of the next six points. S&T wouldn't let Maryville get any closer than three points the rest of the way as the Miners led by as many as 11 points in the frame and would cruise to the 25-15 win.

S&T finished the match recording 40 kills against just eight attack errors to finish with a hitting percentage of .308 and was led by Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) with 12 kills. Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) added nine kills while Alison Mueller (Bartelso, Ill./Mater Dei ) contributed seven kills to the attack.
