Miners drop overtime heartbreaker to Tritons

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T trailed just once in its Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer game Friday night against Missouri-St. Louis – but unfortunately for the Miners, that one time was at the very end of the game as the Tritons came away with a 3-2 overtime win at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

Jon Huelsman scored his second goal of the game 3:24 into extra time to win it for UMSL, after the Miners held a pair of one-goal leads during the second half of play.

Following a scoreless first half, the Miners broke on top shortly after the second half began when Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany) drilled a shot from the top of the box past UMSL goalkeeper Nick Lenkmann.  However, the Tritons knotted the contest less than four minutes later when Huelsman got a pass in front of the S&T net and scored.

S&T moved back in front with just under 30 minutes remaining when Neil Wiaranowski (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) redirected Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township)'s corner kick past Lenkmann to put the Miners up 2-1.  That lead held up until the 79th minute, as Tyler Collico hit a shot from the top of the box past James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) into the upper right corner to even the score at two.

The Miners had three other shots on goal in the second half as they finished regulation time with a 12-9 advantage in overall shots.   UMSL had the only shot in overtime, which turned out to be the game-winner as Huelsman was on the other end of a long feed from the sideline and scored on a shot from close range.

Holloway finished with three saves in goal for the Miners (3-5-1, 2-4-1 GLVC), while each team finished with three corner kicks apiece.  Fuchs and Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) had three shots apiece for the Miners.

The Tritons improved to 7-1-1 overall and 6-1 in the GLVC with the win.

Missouri S&T will return to action Sunday when it hosts Maryville at 2:30 p.m. at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.
