(Aurora, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball team snapped a seven-match losing streak at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover with a
3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 25-15) on Friday afternoon at the Great Lakes Center in Aurora, Ill. It's the first win at the Crossover since defeating Northern Michigan 3-2 back on Oct. 14, 2011.
S&T (11-9) fell behind 8-3 to start the match before scoring six of the next seven points to get even at 9 after back-to-back service aces from
Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa). The Miners fell behind again at 11-10 and then ran off the next four points to take the lead for good. S&T closed out the set by scoring 10 of the final 15 points.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had six of the Miners 12 kills in the first set and hit .667 for the frame. As a team, S&T hit .357 with just two errors in 28 chances.
In the second stanza the Miners stormed out of the gates scoring the first five points and wouldn't look back in building a 14-point advantage and cruised to an 11-point win. S&T had an attack percentage of .414 registering 13 kills against just one error in 29 chances. Haslag, Zellmer and
Claire Friedlund (Parkville, Mo./Park Hill South) had three kills apiece.
In the third set the Huskies (8-10) broke an early tie with a 6-2 run and didn't trail the rest of the set in a 25-20 win. Both teams had 15 kills in the set, but the Miners committed five errors to Michigan Tech's one.
Zellmer and Haslag combined for seven kills to lead the way.
The fourth set went back-and-forth with nine ties and a lead change. The set was tied at 9-9 when S&T began to make its run.
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) sparked an 11-2 run with a kill. Moon and Friedlund teamed up with four kills in the run. The Huskies didn't get closer than seven points the rest of the way as S&T cruised to a 25-15 win.
The Miners finished the match with an attack percentage of .317 recording 53 kills against 13 errors in 126 swings. Haslag led the way with 15 kills while Zellmer finished with 11 and Friedlund had 10.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) dished out 43 assists while
Jackie Pyles (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) had 16 digs.
Michigan Tech finished the match with 47 kills against 17 errors in 121 chances and had a hitting percentage of .248. Lauren Emmert led the Huskies with 14 kills while Noelle Eveland added 13 to the attack. Rachel Pohlod distributed 20 assists while Jacqueline Aird had 16 digs.
S&T is back in action on Saturday morning when it takes on 11
th ranked Grand Valley State at 10 a.m.
