S&T upsets 11th ranked Grand Valley 3-0 at Crossover

(Aurora, Ill.) – The Missouri S&T Miner volleyball squad pulled off the biggest upset in the history of the program on Saturday sweeping past Grand Valley State 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-23) at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover. It's the highest NCAA Division II opponent the Miners have ever beaten.

S&T (12-9) trailed 16-8 in the opening set and then began to make its run scoring 11 of the next 15 points to get within 20-19 and forced Grand Valley (14-3) to take a timeout. The Lakers extended the lead to 21-19 out of the break on a block by Abby Aiken. The Miners responded with four straight points and to take its first lead since early in the frame. An attack error by Aiken set up set point for S&T, but an error brought Grand Valley back to within 24-23. Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood)'s kill on the next swing ended the set.

The Miners stormed out of the gate in set scoring nine of the first 12 points only to see the Lakers come back and even it at 14-all. The game then began to back-and-forth with each side trading points. S&T trailed 21-20, but scored four of the next five points to grab a 24-22 lead. A kill by Betsy Ronda brought the Lakers back to within one, but just like the opener Moon ended the set with a kill.

The Miners started out the third stanza just like the second one racing out to an early five-point lead. The lead eventually grew to eight points before Grand Valley began to chip away and eventually got to within 22-21 on a double block by Ronda and Ally Simmons. Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) recorded a pair of kills to get S&T to match point at 24-22. A service error kept the Lakers alive, but not for along as Haslag ended the match with her 14th kill on the next swing.

The Miners finished the match with 48 kills against 21 errors in 114 swings and had a hitting percentage of .237. S&T also finished the match with 10 team blocks. Haslag had a match-high 14 kills to lead three Miners in double figures. Moon added 11 kills while Jackie Zellmer (Nixa, Mo./Nixa) had 10 kills. Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) distributed 42 assists while Jackie Pyles (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) had 15 digs.
