Miners lead from start to finish to bump off Rockhurst

1/18/2014 8:00:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Leading from start to finish in a game for the first time in over a year, Missouri S&T won its second straight Great Lakes Valley Conference game Saturday as it downed Rockhurst 83-74 at Billy Key Court.

The last game the Miners won in which they never trailed came on New Year's Eve 2012 in a victory over Benedictine-Springfield and marked the first time S&T had not trailed in a conference game since its Feb. 10, 2011 win at Maryville.

Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School) knocked down a three-pointer on the Miners' opening possession just 22 seconds into the game and after Rockhurst's Cooper Beckett scored on the Hawks' first trip down the floor, the Miners rattled off six straight points to build an early 9-2 lead.

S&T would extend that lead to 14 by the 11:20 of the opening half when Bryce Foster (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) drained a three-pointer, then the Miners took what would end up being their largest lead of the contest later in the half at 35-20 after a three-pointer by Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School) with 3:37 to go.  The Miners would hold a 12-point advantage of 40-28 at the half.

In the early stages of the second half, the Miners still held a double-figure lead for most of the first seven minutes and led by 13 with 13:09 to play.  But an 8-0 run by the Hawks, sparked by James Robinson and Liam Duffy, drew Rockhurst to within five by the 12:04 mark.

Moments later the Hawks had a chance to get closer, but Curtis Okafor (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) blocked a shot by Nardie Bogues at the basket and Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East), who retrieved the rebound, went coast-to-coast for a lay-in that extended the lead back to seven.

Brandon McCann – who led the Hawks with 26 points – hit a three-pointer about a minute later to cut the lead to four, then his basket at the 7:13 mark got Rockhurst to within one at 58-57.  Tyler Anderson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit North) scored in the lane for S&T to get the lead back to three, but two free throws by Russell Burns got the Hawks back to within a point again with 6:46 remaining.

But a basket by Khan and a driving layup by Zachary Ellis (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) pushed the Miner lead back to five in just over a minute, then another three-pointer by Foster with 4:09 to go made it a seven-point game; the Miners would hold at least a two-possession lead for the rest of the contest.

After struggling at the free throw line for much of the afternoon, the Miners made all eight of their attempts in the final 57 seconds to keep the Hawks (5-9, 1-6 GLVC) at bay.  S&T was just four-of-10 at the line in the first 39 minutes of play.

Foster led all scorers in the game with 29 points and Khan added 17, as the Miners shot 53.8 percent in the second half and finished the day at 45.6 percent from the floor, ending a run of five straight home games in which they had made at least 50 percent of their field goal attempts.

S&T also had a huge advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Hawks 46-34 as five Miners had at least six rebounds, led by Mudiaga Eruteya (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame)'s nine.  Eruteya also had seven assists in the game for S&T.

The Miners, 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the GLVC, will continue their four-game homestand Thursday when they entertain Maryville in a 7:30 p.m. game at Billy Key Court.
