(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T volleyball team returns home on Tuesday night to face the fourth ranked Central Missouri Jennies in a non-conference match beginning at 6 p.m. The stay at home will be brief as the Miners head to Kansas City this weekend to take on William Jewell and Rockhurst in Great Lakes Valley play.
S&T looks to bounce back from a tough road trip in which it was swept at Southern Indiana and Bellarmine. The Miners had to play from behind in each match and struggled to get in any kind of rhythm. S&T had an attack percentage of .115 for the weekend while its opponents hit .167. The Miners also averaged 2.17 blocks per set.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) finished the weekend with 15 kills while
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and
Holly Tarvin (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) added 14 and 10 respectively.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) averaged 8.67 assists while
Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) had 24 digs.
The Jennies come to town riding a 14-match winning streak to start the season and have dropped just four sets this year. Last week, UCM traveled to Kirksville, Mo., for a non-conference match with Truman State. The Jens dropped the first two sets against the Bulldogs before rallying to win the next three in dramatic fashion. The Jennies trailed 14-11 in the fifth and deciding set, but rallied to win 20-18. UCM hosted Missouri Western last Friday night in a conference tilt defeating the Griffons in three sets.
With October being Breast Cancer Awareness month, the Miners will be playing in their pink and white jerseys and playing with pink and white volleyballs for each home match throughout the month. The volleyballs will be raffled off with half of the proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (
www.bcrfcure.org).
Also on Tuesday the first 100 students through the door receive free pizza (max. 2 slices per student) by showing their student identification card. Students will receive a raffle ticket at the door and have to show those tickets in order to receive the pizza. The pizza will be handed out upstairs on the south balcony in between the second and third sets.
S&T travels to Liberty on Friday evening to take on the Cardinals of William Jewell. The Cardinals enter play this week at 1-12, 0-4 in the GLVC and have lost 12 straight. This past weekend WJC gave 23
rd ranked Indianapolis all it could handle in a five set loss on the road. The Cardinals dropped the first set then won the next two but were unable to close it out.
On Saturday the Miners will head to Kansas City for a matchup with the Hawks of Rockhurst. The Hawks entertain Drury on Friday before playing host to S&T. Rockhurst is 9-3, 3-1 in the GLVC this season and received votes in this week's AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.
