Miners seek first win by hosting Eagles on Hall of Fame Day

9/17/2013 2:34:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's football team will look to get into the win column for the first time in the 2013 season when it faces a Wisconsin-LaCrosse team looking to do likewise in a 1 p.m. game at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

After facing a pair of ranked teams from the NCAA Division II ranks to begin the year, the Miners step outside of their division for a week to face the Eagles from the NCAA Division III Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.  The Miners and Eagles have played twice in recent years, with UW-LaCrosse posting a shutout over S&T in 2009 and the Miners winning 31-24 in the last matchup early in the 2010 campaign.

The Miners dropped games to No. 20 Chadron State in double overtime and to No. 6 Missouri Western over the first two weeks of this year.  Quarterback Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage HS) has completed 63.6 percent of his passes thus far for 495 yards and two touchdowns, with top target Melvin Stovall (Los Angeles, Calif./Lancaster) leading the receivers with 11 catches for 164 yards and a score.  Zenel Hudson (Bayshore, N.Y./Milford Academy) has 119 yards to pace the Miners' ground game.

On defense, linebacker Chris Emesih (Houston, Texas/Westfield) leads the way with 16 tackles and had one of S&T's three quarterback sacks last week at Missouri Western, while cornerback Sean Martin (South Holland, Ill./Seton Academy) has been in on 15 tackles thus far.

Wisconsin-LaCrosse also brings an 0-2 record into play this weekend after losing 41-24 last Saturday to North Central, the sixth-ranked team in NCAA Division III.  The Eagles gave up 674 yards on defense in the loss, but did get one of its scores from its defense on a 53-yard fumble return by defensive tackle Andrew Walsh.

On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Andy Sires has completed 46-of-80 throws for 543 yards and five touchdowns and has spread the wealth among his receivers, as four different players have between five and eight catches on the year.  Jared Stan leads the rushing attack with 118 yards over the first two weeks.

Saturday's game will also be Miner Athletic Hall of Fame Day (related story) and the 2013 induction class will be honored during the halftime intermission.
