Volleyball heads back down South to take part in North Alabama Classic

9/11/2013 11:41:00 AM

(Rolla, Mo.) - After going 2-2 to open its season last weekend last in Florida, the Missouri S&T volleyball squad will hit the road again this weekend traveling to Florence, Ala., to take part in the North Alabama Classic beginning on Friday afternoon. The Miners will be well tested before beginning GLVC play next weekend. Last weekend they were defeated by Minnesota Duluth ranked second in this week's coaches poll and West Florida whose ranked 17th this week.

S&T did pick up a pair of regional victories last weekend defeating Arkansas-Monticello in four sets and then rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Northern Michigan in a thrilling five set match last Saturday. The Miners trailed in the fourth set 19-10, but finished the set on a 15-4 run to force the fifth and deciding set. The nine point margin overcome matched the largest deficit overcome in school history to win a set. The last time it happened was on Oct. 16, 2010 against Wayne State (Mich.) when S&T rallied from a 12-3 hole in the fourth set to win and force a fifth and deciding set. The Miners won that match as well.

Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) and Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) paced the Miner attack last weekend recording 46 and 41 kills respectively. Haslag was named to the all-tournament team averaing 3.62 points, 2.88 kills and 1.12 blocks per set. Wright matched the school record for service aces in a match with six against Monticello. Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) finished the weekend averaging nearly seven assists per set while Cydney Denning (San Antonio, Texas/Brandeis ) averaged 4.40 digs/set.

This figures to be another challenging weekend for the Miners. S&T opens play on Friday against Christian Brothers at 2 p.m. The Lady Bucs have had a historically strong program and figure to be strong again this year. This will be the third meeting between the two schools with CBU having won the first two. On Friday evening the Miners will take on Rollins College at 8 p.m. The Tars enter this weekend at 4-0 and received votes in this week's AVCA poll. They went 18-15 last season and advanced to the NCAA South Regional tournament.

S&T will play a pair of perennial powers on Saturday taking on North Alabama and Harding. The Miners will face off with the hoast Lions beginning at 11 a.m. UNA had sup-par season last year going 12-18, but have been historically good. This will be the second meeting between the schools. At 2 p.m., S&T will take on a Bison squad that is 1-3 on the season. Harding swept Cal Poly Pomona in its season opener then dropped its next three out at the Cal Sate-San Bernardino tournament. The Bison leads the all-time series with the Miners 2-1, but haven't met since 2009.
