Saints' hot hand sends Miners to defeat

2/7/2013 10:04:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – When Missouri S&T played at Maryville on Jan. 26, the Saints rained down 14 three-pointers and hit two of every three shots they took in the first half of an eventual 21-point win.

On Thursday night at Billy Key Court, the Saints outdid that, knocking down a school record 20 shots from beyond the arc and finishing the game at 67.4 percent from the field as they blasted the Miners 89-53 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

The Miners trailed 13-12 with just over 11 minutes remaining in the first half before the Saints started going on their rampage.  Beginning with a three-pointer by Derek Deters at the 9:48 mark, Maryville made its final 12 shots of the first half – including eight from three-point land – and built a 20-point lead by the intermission.

Maryville's big weapon during that run was sophomore guard Armon Provo, who had 21 of his game-high 31 points by halftime and was eight-of-eight from the field with five treys in the first 20 minutes.  Provo would end up making all 11 of his field goal attempts and was seven-of-seven from three-point land as he wound up going 19-of-20 from the field in the two games against S&T this season.

Meanwhile, the Miners struggled to get untracked on the offensive end themselves, shooting just 36.5 percent in the game.  S&T had some leads during the first nine minutes of play, last leading 9-7 after Julian Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School)'s layup at the 15:19 mark, but a 6-0 spurt by the Saints gave them the lead for good.

Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East)'s three-pointer with 11:06 left in the half cut the lead to one before the Saints started their decisive outburst roughly 90 seconds later.

Mudi Eruteya led the Miners with 14 points and Curtis Okafor (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) added 13.

Maryville, who leads the GLVC in victories with 19 following Thursday's win, moved to 19-5 overall and 9-3 in the conference heading into a Saturday showdown with GLVC West leader Drury in Springfield, Mo.

The Miners dropped to 6-13 overall and 2-10 in the GLVC and will host Missouri-St. Louis Saturday at 3 p.m. at Billy Key Court.  Saturday's game will be Fort Leonard Wood Appreciation Day; all military members – active, reserve or retired – and their immediate families will be admitted free with a military identification card.  UMSL lost 90-75 Thursday at Drury.
