Box Score LIBERTY, Mo. – William Jewell used a late first half run to take the lead over Missouri S&T Saturday afternoon and went on to post an
82-72 victory in Great Lakes Valley Conference play over the Miners at the Mabee Center.
A 12-0 run covering the end of the first half and first minute of the second allowed William Jewell to overtake the Miners and it held off a couple of charges by S&T in the final 15 minutes to send the Miners to their sixth consecutive setback.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than four. S&T trailed 17-13 following a Ricky Tisdale basket at the 7:57 mark, but Mudi Eruteya hit a three-point and
Curtis Okafor (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) scored on a layup to put the Miners up by one.
Craig Mattson's three-pointer put the Cardinals back up by three, but the Miners moved back into the lead on a layup by Eruteya and a pair of free throws by
Michael Jackson (Wichita, Kan./Wichita East) with 4:44 to play in the half.
The Miners would extend their lead to four following a lay-in by
Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School) with 3:30 left before halftime, but William Jewell closed the half on an 8-0 run, capped by Devonte Bell's three-pointer just before the buzzer sounded, to take a 30-26 lead into the locker room.
William Jewell immediately pushed the lead out to eight in the first minute of the second half, but S&T clawed into the margin, cutting it to four on Zach Ellis' lay-in following a steal at the 15:03 mark. Bell answered with five straight points to put the Cardinals back up by nine in less than a minute.
The Cardinals' lead stood at 12 after a pair of Dillon Deck free throws with 6:22 remaining, but Khan scored five straight on a three-pointer and floater in the lane to cut the lead down to seven with 5:15 on the clock. Deck missed two free throws on Jewell's next trip down the floor, but a Miner turnover led to a three-pointer by Mattson to put the margin back to 10.
S&T could only get as close as eight after the Mattson trey.
Eruteya led three Miners in double figures with 16 points, while
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) added 14 and Ellis finished with 11. The Miners shot 45.8 percent from the floor, but the Cardinals (12-13, 8-9 GLVC) shot 52.1 percent for the afternoon and got a game-high 21 points from Bell as well as 18 from Deck.
The Miners (6-17, 2-14 GLVC) will wrap up their 2012-13 season with a two-game homestand this week, beginning with Monday's make-up game against Rockhurst University. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Billy Key Court.
