Box Score 2 SEARCY, Ark. – Missouri S&T got good pitching performances from its starters on Sunday, but the Miner bats were held silent by Harding's pitchers as the Bisons swept a doubleheader from S&T by scores of
3-2 and
3-0.
Harding won the opener in its last at-bat – the second such win during the weekend – then scored three first inning runs and held the Miners to one hit in the nightcap to complete the sweep of the three-game series. Missouri S&T had only three hits in the two games on Sunday.
Game 1 – Harding 3, Miners 2
Missed opportunities plagued the Miners in the opener – a game in which they had only two hits but had great chances to grab the lead in both the seventh and ninth innings. The Bisons would win the game in the bottom of the ninth on Jeremy Bohnett's double after a two-out walk to Matt Calhoun.
Harding grabbed the lead in the third on an RBI double by Kyle Atkins, but S&T tied the score in the fifth on its first hit of the game. After
Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) reached on an error with two outs and went to second on the bad throw,
Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) delivered an RBI single to even the game at one.
The Bisons regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning when Erin McCarver drove in Atkins on an infield hit with two outs in the frame.
Harding starter Cameron Walker held the Miners to just the one hit over the first six innings before turning the game over to the bullpen, but as was the case on Saturday, the Miners rallied against the first reliever they saw and scored the tying run without having a ball leave the infield.
Nick Ulrich (St. Louis, Mo./Vianney) reached on an error to start the inning, then following a sacrifice bunt,
Michael Boxell (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt North) was hit by a pitch and Wobbe walked to load the bases. Rich followed by drawing a walk to force in the tying run and force a pitching change. Josh Spears took over on the mound for Harding and got
Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) to hit into an inning-ending double play on a hard hit ball.
The Miners created a mess of their own in the bottom of the seventh with a pair of walks and a wild pickoff throw mixed in put runners at the corners with nobody out.
Harry Dunsford (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) entered the game and got S&T out of the jam, striking out two and getting Bohnett to line out to end the frame.
S&T had a chance to get the lead in the ninth when
Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) bunted his way on and Wobbe drew a two-out walk, but Spears fanned Rich to end the threat.
Dunsford got the first two hitters in the ninth, but walked Calhoun and Bohnett – on an 0-2 pitch – doubled to the opposite field to score pinch-runner Zac Stewart with the winning run.
Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) got his first career start for the Miners and had his longest career stint by going six innings, allowing six hits and striking out one. Rich and Brower had the only two hits for the Miners, who were outhit 7-2 in the opener.
Game 2 – Harding 3, Miners 0
Thomas Laudadio overcame a rough start to his Miner debut to pitch well over the final five innings, but the Miner offense struggled once again as it managed only one hit against Harding pitchers Hayden Shirley and Bronson Smith.
Laudadio gave up hits to each of the first three hitters he faced and the Bisons scored all three of their runs within the first batters of the first inning. But after that, he settled down and held Harding to only two hits over his last five innings of work, setting the Bisons down in order in three of those five frames as he finished with four strikeouts and just five hits allowed.
However, Shirley carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Rich got a two-out single to break it up. That inning provided the Miners their best opportunity to score as they had two runners on base, but they came up empty on that chance. Smith, who got the save for Harding in Saturday's win, set S&T down in order in the seventh for his second save of the weekend.
Missouri S&T is scheduled to open its 2013 home schedule Saturday when it faces No. 14-ranked Grand Valley State in a doubleheader at the S&T Baseball Field. Saturday's twinbill begins at noon as will a single game between the teams on Sunday.
