Miners grind out thrilling overtime victory over Young Harris

11/29/2013 8:43:00 PM

Box Score OWENSBORO, Ky. – A game with a plethora of ebbs and flows went in favor of Missouri S&T's men's basketball team Friday night, as the Miners went into overtime to bump off a talented Young Harris team 108-106 in the first round of the Kentucky Wesleyan Thanksgiving Classic.

After the Mountain Lions had sent the game into overtime on Isaiah Johnson's three-pointer at the buzzer – and then took a pair of leads in the early stages of the extra period – the Miners used a 8-0 run to take the lead for good and held off a last-moment effort by Young Harris to catch up.

Bryve Foster's three-point play with 1:51 left started the run and put S&T in front at 100-99 in a contest that featured 24 ties and 20 lead changes.

Foster's basket, which came on a driving layup, was followed by a steal by Mudiaga Eruteya (Chicago, Ill./Notre Dame) that led to a lay-in by Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East), then Eruteya hit three-of-four at the line to extend the lead to six.

Young Harris cut the margin to three on Steve Viterbo's three-pointer with 16 seconds left, then Foster nailed two free throws a second later to get the get back to five.   Viterbo hit two free throws with 11 seconds to go before Eruteya hit one-of-two to give S&T a four-point lead.  Viterbo was then fouled on a three-point try with four seconds remaining, made the first two free throws, then missed the last intentionally in an effort to get the ball back.

Jovante Simmons got the long rebound , but Eruteya swooped in from behind to knock the ball away to allow time to expire.

The Miners led by as many as seven in the first half at 29-22 on Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School)'s tip-in at the 8:14 mark, but the Mountain Lions made a 7-0 run to erase the lead.  S&T regained the lead on a three-pointer by Khan – one of five hit by the senior guard on a night where he scored a career-high 27 points – but Young Harris would get the lead back and held it for most of the balance of the half, leading 47-45 at the intermission.

Young Harris would take its largest lead of the game on C.J. Wilson's three-pointer to open the second half, but S&T answered right back and eventually built its lead back to seven on a trey by Khan with 14:18 to go.  But a 9-0 run by the Mountain Lions allowed them to regain the lead, after which neither team held an advantage of more than four points for the balance of regulation time.

S&T took a 90-88 lead when Foster made a pair at the line with 55 seconds to go, then Aaron Emmanuel (Brampton, Ont./LaLumiere School) tied up Herdie Lawrence to force a jump ball to give it the ball back to S&T with 40 seconds left.  Foster was fouled again with 17 seconds to play and made the first of two at the line to extend the lead to three, then Johnson missed a three – but Viterbo got the board and sent it back to Johnson in the corner where he drained a fall-away three as the buzzer sounded.

The Miners scored the first four points of overtime, only to see the Mountain Lions answer with six straight.  Nesbitt tied the game with two free throws, but Johnson gave YHC the lead back on its next possession before Foster started the game-deciding run on the Miners' next trip down the floor.

Foster, the GLVC's leading scorer entering Friday's contest, added 23 to go along with Khan's 27 as S&T had five players in double figures.  Eruteya, celebrating his birthday Friday, posted 17 points, while Emmanuel finished with 12 and Danylo Zuikov (Kiev, Ukraine/LaLumiere School) with 11 as S&T was 10-of-24 from three-point range and forced Young Harris into 25 turnovers.

Lawrence led the Mountain Lions (4-1) with 27 points and Viterbo added 26 as Young Harris shot 57.6 percent from the field to the 51.6 percent mark posted by S&T.

The Miners, now 3-2 on the year, will play in the championship game of the tournament at 7:30 p.m., Saturday against Kentucky Wesleyan, who defeated Wilberforce 100-64 in Friday's second game.
