Lady Miners travel to Springfield for Doubletree Houlihans Thanksgiving Classic

(Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners hit the road for the first time in the 2013-14 campaign traveling to Springfield, Mo., to take part in the Doubletree Houlihans Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Drury University this weekend. The Lady Miners will take on Union University at 7:45 pm., on Friday and then will face former MIAA rival Missouri Western at the same time on Saturday.

S&T has won two straight heading into Friday night's contest with the Lady Bulldogs. The Lady Miners shook off a sluggish first half to defeat Harris-Stowe 80-70 last Saturday afternoon in Rolla. S&T is averaging 78.5 points per game and has topped the 80-point mark twice through four games. Mia Wesley (Philadelphia, Pa./John Bartram) continues to lead the team in scoring with 19 points per game and Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) is dropping home 12.5 a contest. Three other Lady Miners sit just outside double figures with Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) averaging 9.8 a game while Senait McLeod (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) and Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) are each averaging 9.5 per contest.

As a team S&T is shooting 50.7 percent (116-for-229) from the field, has connected on 27 of its 57 attempts from beyond the arc and is shooting 66.3 percent at the foul line. The Lady Miners are outrebounding its opponents by 5.5 rebounds per game.

Union enters play this weekend at 2-0 on the season and haven't played since Nov. 19 when it traveled down to Morrow, Ga., to defeat then third
ranked Clayton State 74-65. The Lady Bulldogs led by as many as 25 points with 9:55 to go in the game then had to withstand a furious rally to hand the Lakers their first home loss in seven seasons.

Amy Philamlee, a 5-5, junior guard, from Jonesboro, Ark., leads the team in scoring and rebounding averaging 24 points and six rebounds per contest. Chelsea Bodiford and Astrid Huttemann are the only other two Union players averaging double figures with 18.5 and 16.5 ppg respectively. Union is shooting 53.1 percent (60-for-113) from the floor, has connected on 28 of its 58 attempts from three and is shooting nearly 83 percent at the charity stripe.

Missouri Western comes into Friday night's game at Drury having won its first four contests of the season. The Griffons are currently in a stretch of playing four straight Great Lakes Valley Conference teams. MWSU cruised past Illinois Springfield 78-41 on Nov. 15 and then had to survive in a 63-59 road win at Rockhurst this past Saturday. The Griffons are averaging 76.0 points per game while holding their opponents to just 47.0 per contest.

Ariana Novak, a 5-8, junior guard, from Chicago, Ill., is the lone Griffon player averaging double figures in scoring with 10.3 a contest. Tiara Hall is dropping home 9.3 points a night while Sharniece Lewis is averaging 9.0 per game. Hall leads Missouri Western in rebounding with 7.5 rebounds per game.
