Box Score (Kansas City, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Miners played another tight match, but came up on the short end of the scoreboard in a
3-0 (23-25, 25-27, 17-25) on Saturday afternoon in Kansas City. The match featured 20 ties and seven lead changes.
The Miners (7-8, 3-3 GLVC) fell behind early in the opening set 8-4 before scoring six of the next seven points to take its first lead of the match on a pair of errors by the Hawks (11-3, 5-1) at 10-8. Rockhurst countered with an 8-2 run of its own to grab a 16-12 advantage. The lead grew to five on a couple of occasions before S&T whittled it down to 24-23 on a service ace by
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West).
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) had a chance to even the set but was blocked at the net by Emily Ready and Whitney Kostal to give the Hawks the 25-23 win.
The Miners scored the first five points of the second set and led for the early portions of it. Rockhurst eventually came back to tie it at 10-all on a kill by Morgan Rietzke. S&T regained the lead and held a 17-15 edge before the Hawks countered with a 6-1 spurt to take a 21-18 lead. The Miners came back to tie it at 22-all on an error by Alyssa Arnold. Rockhurst was the first to 24 getting a kill from Maggie Hummel and an error on
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) set up set point. S&T fought back getting a kill from
Claire Luther (St. Louis, Mo./Lutheran South) and then
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) and Moon blocked Hummel at the net to even it up. The Hawks scored again to take a 25-24 lead, but
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) answered with a kill to even it back up at 25-25. Rockhurst scored the last two points of the set getting kills from Hummel and Kostal to take the 2-0 lead.
The Hawks raced out to a 5-1 lead to begin the third set, but the Miners quickly came back to tie it up as Rockhurst committed three errors in the run. The set remained tight over the next 16 points with neither side holding larger than a two-point lead. The Hawks used a 7-1 run to take control of the set building a 19-13 lead. S&T wouldn't get closer than five points the rest of the way as Rockhurst took the finale 25-17.
The Miners finished the match with an attack percentage of .146 (39k/20e/130ta). Moon led the offense with 10 kills while Haslag and Wright had six each. Plunk dished out 34 assists while
Caitlin Brocker (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central ) had 11 digs.
Rockhurst had a hitting percentage of .229 for the match and was led offensively by Rietzke with 10 kills and Arnold with nine. Kostal distributed 36 assists while Arnold and Victoria Mahl had 15 digs apiece.
S&T concludes its three match road trip on Tuesday when it takes on GLVC rival Drury in Springfield at 7 p.m.
