Box Score (Liberty, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T rode a hot hitting attack to break a three match losing streak defeating William Jewell by the score of
3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 27-25) on Friday evening in Liberty, Mo.
The Miners (7-7. 3-2 GLVC) dominated the opening set hitting .483 with 14 kills against no errors in 29 attempts. The set was tied at 4 when S&T began to take control going on a 7-2 run to build a five point lead. The Miners continued to pull away eventually building a nine point their biggest of the set. The Cardinals (1-13, 0-5 GLVC) closed to within six points, but S&T closed the set out on back-to-back errors by William Jewell.
Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) and
Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) led the way with four kills each while
Gracey Moon (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) had three.
The Miners overcame some sloppy play in set two rallying from a 15-11 deficit thanks in large part to a 9-0 run. Moon started the run with a kill and S&T took advantage of some errors by the Cardinals.
Allie Plunk (Hurst, Texas/Birdville) had a pair of kills in the run as well. William Jewell cut the Miner advantage to 20-17, but S&T finished strong scoring five of the last six points to take the set 25-18. The Miners had an attack percentage of .259 (13k/6e/27ta) and were led by
Holly Tarvin (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs)'s six kills. Plunk contributed four to the attack as well. S&T's defense held WJC to a .000 attack percentage (8k/8e/32ta). Kaylee Marquardt led the Cardinals with three kills.
Just like the second set the Miners had to rallying from a 19-15 deficit with a 9-1 run to take a 24-20 lead. S&T allowed William Jewell to stay in the match giving up five straight points to allow the Cardinals to retake the lead at 25-24. The Miners fought back with three straight points to take the set 27-25. Plunk tied it with a kill and then served the match out. The Cardinals were called for a rotation error to make it match point and then Tarvin ended it with her 13
th kill of the night to give S&T the win.
The Miners finished the match with an attack percentage of .320 (44k/13e/97ta). Tarvin led the way while Plunk finished with eight kills, Wright contributed seven and Haslag and Moon had six each. Plunk distributed 33 assists while
Caitlin Brocker (Crystal Lake, Ill./Marian Central ) had 18 digs.
WJC finished the match with an attack percentage of .087 (31k/22e/104ta). Marquardt led the way with nine kills while Libby Ording had eight. Cailynn Hayter had 23 assists and Katie Damgar had 11 digs.
S&T is back in action Saturday when it heads to Rockhurst for a match with the Hawks beginning at 3 p.m.
