Flyers edge Miner swimmers in first of two weekend dual meets

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – In a back-and-forth battle all night, Lewis captured the final two events and came away with a 106-95 victory over Missouri S&T in the first of two weekend dual meets Friday night.

The Miners won five events Friday, including two by Ethan Goldfarb (Arlington, Texas/The Oakridge School), but the Flyers captured three of the top four spots in the 100-yard breaststroke and then beat the Miners in the 800-yard freestyle relay to win the meet.

Goldfarb won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:50.44 and 400-yard individual medley in 4:04.44 as well as finishing second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:45.99.  The Miners also got first place finishes on an individual basis from Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad) in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 55.78 seconds and Jon Glaser (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) in the 500-freestyle in 4:43 flat.

S&T also won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:38.12 behind Chris Lohff (Powder Springs, Ga./Hillgrove), Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central), Colton Krause (Bartlesville, Okla./Bartlesville) and Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands).

Glaser took second in the 200-freestyle relay in 1:45.33, as did Kerc in the 50-freestyle in 21.86 seconds, Krause in the 100-butterfly in 51.21 seconds, Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) in the 100-freestyle in 47.11 seconds and Larkins in the 100-breaststroke in 1:00.53.

The runner-up finish in the relay came from Glaser, Krause, Kerc and Sponsler, as they finished with a time of 6:59.55.

Third place finishes were posted by Sponsler in the 200-freestyle in 1:45.98, Lohff in the 400-IM in 4:24.88 and 100-backstroke in 56.79 seconds, Chase Davis (Tulsa, Okla./Union) in the 100-butterfly in 54.12 seconds and Norris in the 100-freestyle in 49.15 seconds.

The Miners and Flyers will compete again Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
