Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team closed out its five-game homestand Saturday on a down note, as Lewis pulled away from the Miners in the second half to take a
70-55 decision at Billy Key Court.
As was the case in Thursday's game against Wisconsin-Parkside, the Miners got out of the gate well as they led by nine at 17-8 by the 9:34 mark of the first half. But a 10-0 run by the Flyers, capped by a basket by Jeff Jarosz, gave the Flyers their first lead of the game at the seven-minute mark.
S&T regained the lead on its next trip down the floor on a lay-in by
Curtis Okafor (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege), but Lewis' Kyle Nelson answered with a basket at the other end to put the Flyers in front for good with 6:15 remaining in the first half.
Lewis would take a seven-point advantage to halftime, but the Miners were able to cut the lead to two on two occasions early in the second half. A pair of free throws by Mudi Eruteya made it 35-33, then a jumper by
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) at the 16:37 mark made it 37-35 in the Flyers' favor.
However, Lewis responded by running off eight consecutive points – the first six by Ryan Jackson on a three-pointer and a conventional three-point play – to extend its lead to 10 and S&T could only get as close as seven over the balance of the contest. The Flyers were able to take advantage of some foul issues the Miners had with their inside game, outscoring S&T 16-6 in the paint in the second half after being outscored by a 14-8 margin in the first 20 minutes.
The loss dropped S&T to 4-6 on the season and 0-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Lewis moved to 7-3 and 1-1 in league play.
Eruteya recorded his third straight double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Miners and added three steals, while Khan was also in double figures with 14 points. The Miners held Lewis to just 37.5 percent shooting from the field and 5-of-23 from three-point range, but made only 30.4 percent of their own attempts and only one of their 12 tries from long distance.
Jackson led all scorers in the game with 23 points and Jarosz added 16. The Flyers also outrebounded the Miners 39-32 and forced S&T into 20 turnovers.
The Miners, who dropped back-to-back games for the first time this season with Saturday's loss, will head to the road for a pair of games next week, beginning with Thursday's 5:30 p.m. contest against Saint Joseph's in Rensselaer, Ind.
