Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Missouri S&T picked up a victory away from home for the first time this season Thursday night, holding off Rockhurst
69-65 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at Mason-Halpin Gymnasium.
The win didn't come without some anxious moments for the Miners, as the Hawks trailed by two and had the ball after S&T missed a shot with 11 seconds remaining. Brandon McCann, who had a big second half for the Hawks, came up short on a foul line jumper and the Miners got the rebound to improve to 6-11 overall and 2-8 in GLVC play.
After Rockhurst scored the first six points of the contest, the Miners answered by putting nine straight on the scoreboard, capped by
Michael Jackson (Wichita, Kan./Wichita East)'s fast break layup at the 13:11 mark. The Hawks would eventually tie the score at 15 on Liam Duffy's three-pointer with 8:25 to play in the half, but the Miners rattled off 12 of the next 15 points to take their largest lead of the half at 27-18 when
Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School) made the first of two at the line with five minutes to go.
Rockhurst cut that lead down to two with a 7-0 run, but a driving lay-up by Mudi Eruteya halted the spurt and S&T would close the first half with a 33-28 lead.
But as the second half opened, the Hawks ran off the first six points to regain the lead for the first time since the Miners' early 9-0 run, moving in front on a baseline jumper by McCann. McCann made a steal and layup moments later to extend the lead to three, but Jackson followed that with a three-point play at the other end to knot the score at 36 at the 16:46 mark.
However, McCann – who had only two points in the first half – continued his scoring spree after the intermission to start putting the game in the Hawks' control. His layup and subsequent free throw with 14:51 to go gave Rockhurst a five-point lead at 43-38.
The Hawks eventually built the lead to six, but Eruteya drilled a three-pointer with exactly nine minutes to go to tie the score at 50, then hit a layup moments later to put S&T in front. Eruteya missed the free throw that followed, but
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) stole the ball from James Robinson as he was bringing it up the floor and scored to give the Miners a four-point advantage.
A big play in the game came with 4:46 as after Rockhurst's Cooper Beckett ran down a missed shot, he tried the save the ball by throwing it out to mid-court. However, Zach Ellis tipped the ball away from Robinson and into the hands of Khan, who hit a lay-up to give the Miners a 54-50 lead.
From there, the Miners held off the Hawks down the stretch, although Rockhurst had a chance to tie the game in the final moments on the shot by McCann. The attempt came up short and Ellis corralled the rebound; Khan hit two free throws with 5.3 seconds to play to clinch the win for S&T.
Eruteya scored a career-high 23 points for the Miners – the most for an S&T player this season – while Jackson finished with 10. The Miners shot 47.9 percent on the night and also outrebounded the Hawks 32-26.
McCann scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to lead Rockhurst, while Brett Hornung had 12 points and Duffy 11 for the Hawks (3-14, 2-8 GLVC).
The Miners return home Saturday to open a three-game homestand, hosting William Jewell in a 5 p.m. contest at Billy Key Court.
