Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – A promising start didn't last for Missouri S&T's men's basketball team Thursday night, as Wisconsin-Parkside shut down the Miners from the floor while heating up on its own part to come away with a
72-50 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Billy Key Court.
The Rangers trailed by seven with under 10 minutes to go in the first half, but overcame that margin to take a lead by halftime and followed up by shooting 57.1 percent in the second half – compared to S&T's 33.3 percent mark in the final 20 minutes – to outscore the Miners 38-19 after the intermission.
S&T got out of the gate fast, taking an early 9-3 lead after a follow dunk by Mudi Eruteya and expanding that lead to nine by the 12:51 mark following a three-point play by Eruteya. But after two free throws by
Michael Jackson (Wichita, Kan./Wichita East) with 9:34 remaining in the half that gave the Miners a 22-15 lead, S&T went over five minutes without scoring to allow the Rangers to take their first lead with a 13-0 run.
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) ended the scoring drought with a jumper that started a 9-2 spurt that would give S&T the lead back at 31-30 on
Julian Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School)'s two free throws at the 2:21 mark, but the Miners would not score for the rest of the half and the Rangers would get baskets by Zygimantas Riauka and Jeremy Saffold to take a 34-31 lead to the locker room.
After the teams traded baskets to open the second half, the Rangers rattled off 11 straight points to take a 14-point lead, then continued to build on it as the Miners struggled from the floor throughout the second half, not only with their shooting but also taking care of the ball. S&T was just six-of-18 from the floor and committed 11 of their 20 turnovers after the break.
Khan led the Miners with 14 points and Eruteya recorded his second double-double in as many games and third on the year with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Khan also had three steals in the game as he went six-of-10 from the floor and converted both of his three-point shots.
The Miners made only 35.6 percent of their shots in the game to UW-Parkside's 52.5 percent.
Saffold, the GLVC's leading scorer when play began Thursday, scored a game-high 20 points and Conrad Krutwig added 10 for the Rangers (6-3, 1-0 GLVC).
Missouri S&T, now 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the GLVC, will host Lewis (6-3, 0-1 GLVC) Saturday at 3 p.m. at Billy Key Court. The Flyers lost 84-59 Thursday at No. 14-ranked Drury.
