UMSL breaks free in second half to down Miners 76-62

1/24/2013 9:48:00 PM

Box Score ST. LOUIS, Mo. – A 19-2 run by Missouri-St. Louis in the first six minutes of the second half swung the tide of Thursday's game with Missouri S&T, leading the Tritons to a 76-62 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over the Miners at Chuck Smith Court.

Missouri S&T held a 34-29 lead 90 seconds into the second half, but the Tritons exploded thanks to points off turnovers and hot shooting from three-point range, as UMSL converted four times from long range during that decisive stretch.  The Miners were able to make one run at the Tritons after that, but another quick spurt by the Tritons was enough to keep S&T at bay.

The Miners raced out to a 10-2 lead to start the game, with Michael Jackson (Wichita, Kan./Wichita East) scoring six of those 10 for S&T.  Jackson's layup at the 16:14 mark gave the Miners that early eight-point advantage.

UMSL cut into the lead and caught the Miners for the first time at the 5:43 mark on a jumper by Kevin Dwyer.  S&T regained the lead on Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School)'s basket, but a three-pointer by Aaeron Smith with 3:51 to go before halftime gave the Tritons their first lead at 23-22.

However, another basket by Nesbitt at the 2:47 mark put the Miners ahead to stay in the first half, as S&T would take a 28-27 lead to the locker room.

The Miners would extend their advantage to five in the early moments of the second half on a jumper by Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East), but a quick six-point spurt by the Tritons, capped by a Joshua McCoy floater along the baseline, gave UMSL the lead back before Mudi Eruteya scored his first points of the night at the 16:46 mark to give S&T a 36-35 lead.

UMSL's Michael Weber answered with a three-pointer on the Tritons' next trip down the floor, a basket that started a 13-0 run that gave the Tritons their biggest lead of the game of 12 with 14:14 remaining.

But just as it seemed the Miners were about to get knocked out of the contest, they responded with six straight points on a three-pointer by Julian Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) and a lay-in and free throw by Eli Steinbeck (Hermann, Mo./Hermann) to cut the margin in half.  Moments later, a layup by Khan after an UMSL turnover got the lead down to three with 11:16 to play.

S&T missed a chance to draw even closer about a minute later and then went cold from the field, allowing the Tritons to extend their advantage back into double figures on Neil Branham's three-point play with 8:40 on the clock.  UMSL would lead by at least eight – the last time S&T got that close was with 44 seconds to go -- for the duration of the contest.

Khan led the Miners with 17 points while Nesbitt finished with 12 as the Miners shot 44.1 percent from the field for the night.  S&T also held a 38-33 edge on the boards over the Tritons, but committed 17 turnovers in the game.

Darian Cartharn led three players in double figures for the Tritons (11-5, 4-4 GLVC) with 17 points, as UMSL shot 54.2 percent in the second half after hitting just 28.6 percent of its shots prior to the intermission.

The Miners, 5-10 overall and 1-7 in the GLVC, continue their road swing Saturday in St. Louis when they play at Maryville University in a 3:15 p.m. contest.
