Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T shot a season-best 57.8 percent from the field and got a huge game from junior guard Mudi Eruteya to earn its first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, knocking off Illinois Springfield
69-60 at Billy Key Court.
The Miners went 26-of-45 from the field – shooting equally well in each half – and made 10 three-pointers as they snapped a five-game losing streak. Eruteya, meanwhile, fell one assist short of a triple-double in the contest as he finished with 14 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists as well as a pair of steals.
After UIS got a layup from Brandon Snowden on its opening possession of the game, the Miners ran off the next six points and never trailed again.
The Prairie Stars were within two early in the game when the Miners put together a 10-2 spurt to build a 10-point lead by the 12:57 mark. Eruteya had a hand in all 10 of the Miner points with a three-pointer and assists on the other three S&T baskets.
The Miners would build that lead to as many as 13 on two occasions and would lead by six at the intermission as they shot 58.3 percent in the opening half. S&T would extend the margin to 12 in the opening moments of the second half following a three-pointer by Zach Ellis and still led by 11 with 13:24 to go following another three-pointer by
Filmore Bouldes (Romulus, Mich./Romulus), but a 9-0 run by the Prairie Stars brought them to within two by the 11:15 mark.
Dusko Despot's three-pointer made it 49-47 at that point, but Eruteya answered with a three-pointer to spark a 10-0 S&T run that got the lead back to 12 with 7:19 to go. The Miners got a three-pointer from
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East), a free throw from
Curtis Okafor (Kansas City, Mo./Bishop Miege) and another trey from Bouldes to get the margin back to 12 during that four-minute stretch.
UIS, who shot just 38.9 percent in the game and made only four-of-20 from beyond the arc, could only get as close as seven over the final seven minutes.
Missouri S&T shot 57.1 percent in the second half and made seven of its 10 three-pointers in the final 20 minutes.
Eruteya, who had his fifth double-double of the year and Khan finished with 14 points apiece to lead the Miners, while Ellis had 13 and Bouldes matched his career high with 11 points. The Miners also outrebounded the Prairie Stars 32-26 in the game and allowed only one second chance point all afternoon.
Regan Bruenger had 15 points off the bench to lead UIS (4-11, 2-5 GLVC), while West Dawson and Dylan Sparkman scored 10 points apiece.
Missouri S&T (5-9, 1-6 GLVC) will open a three-game road stretch Thursday at Missouri-St. Louis; game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
