Miners' late rally falls short as Quincy takes 62-57 win

1/17/2013 10:15:00 PM

Box Score ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's men's basketball team was unable to secure its first win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Thursday, as Quincy held off a late surge by the Miners to win 62-57 at Billy Key Court.

S&T was able to cut a 10-point Quincy lead with just over six minutes to play down to two in the final moments, but couldn't get over the hump as it fell for the fifth consecutive time and dropped to 4-9 overall and 0-6 in GLVC play.  Quincy broke a four-game losing streak to win its second game in six tries in conference action.

The Miners had tied the score at 43 after a jumper by Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) at the 11:40 mark, but went scoreless for over five minutes, during which time the Hawks scored 10 in a row to take their largest lead of the game. Tyler Thompson's backdoor lay-up following the Khan basket put Quincy back in front and the run ended when Nate Des Jardins hit the second of two free throws with 6:11 remaining.

S&T climbed back into the game, getting to within two at 55-53 on Mudi Eruteya's jumper with 2:14 to go, but the Hawks were able to push that margin back to six over the next 1:13.  Two free throws by Khan, followed by a lay-up by Zach Ellis after he retrieved an offensive rebound on the perimeter, drew S&T back to within two again with 27 seconds to go.

However, Jordan Wilson made two free throws seven seconds later and Thompson added another free throw after the Miners were unable to score following the Wilson free throws for the final margin.

The Miners got out of the gate well, just as they have in their two previous conference games at home, leading 10-2 less than four minutes into play after a short jumper by Michael Jackson (Wichita, Kan./Wichita East).  S&T would continue to hold the advantage until Grant Meyer sunk a three-pointer at the 11:02 mark to tie the game as the Hawks used a 9-0 run to erase the lead.

Quincy used another run of seven straight points to take its largest lead of the half of 28-21 with 5:22 to go, but S&T would get to within one by the intermission when Ellis nailed a jumper just before the end of the half.  The Miners would then take what turned out to be their only lead of the second half on a Jackson basket nearly three minutes into the second half.  Wilson answered the Jackson basket with a three-pointer that gave Quincy the lead back.

Eruteya led the Miners with 14 points in the game and Ellis added 10 as MissourI S&T shot 45.5 percent from the field.  The Miners also outrebounded the Hawks 30-26 – Eruteya had a game-high nine boards – but the Miners were hurt by free throw shooting as they were just 11-of-21 and on points off turnovers, where Quincy had a five-point advantage.

Chris Babbitt led Quincy (7-7, 2-4 GLVC) with 19 points while Wilson finished with 13.

The Miners will conclude their weekend at home Saturday when they host Illinois Springfield in a 3 p.m. game at Billy Key Court.  The Prairie Stars (4-10, 2-4 GLVC) lost 90-70 Thursday at Drury.
