Box Score INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Missouri S&T was unable to keep pace with the nation's seventh-ranked team Saturday afternoon, as a hot-shooting University of Indianapolis team knocked off the Miners
93-77 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play at Nicoson Hall.
The Greyhounds, who came into the game shooting better than 51 percent from the floor as a team, shot 56.3 percent in the opening half to build a 19-point lead and ended the day at 54.1 percent to improve to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the GLVC. The Miners fell for the fifth time in as many conference outings and to 4-8 on the year.
The Miners hung in with the Greyhounds in the early stages of the contest, taking a 9-7 lead on a three-pointer by Zach Ellis at the 16:29 mark. S&T got two free throws from Ellis a little over a minute later to go ahead 11-7, but UIndy moved ahead for good on its next trip down the floor on James Hollowell's three-pointer that sparked a 16-0 run the put the Greyhounds up 25-11.
A key sequence during the run was a seven-point trip for UIndy at the 12:09 mark, as Leland Brown scored to close a fast break and S&T was called for an intentional foul on the play. After Brown hit the two free throws that followed, Avery Harmon drained a three-pointer to complete the possession.
S&T was able to close a 20-point Greyhound lead down to 12 when
Julian Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) hit a foul line jumper with 3:15 to go in the half, but UIndy finished the half with a 19-point lead of 49-30.
The Greyhounds proceeded to build their lead up to a high of 28 points in the early stages of the second half, outscoring S&T 19-10 over the first six minutes to build their advantage that margin by the first media timeout.
S&T was able to cut well into the difference over the final 14 minutes, knocking the lead down to 15 with 4:32 to go on a lay-in by
Nusrath Khan (Morton Grove, Ill./Maine East) and again moments later on a basket by
Michael Jackson (Wichita, Kan./Wichita East); S&T would eventually bring the margin to 13 in the final minute of play.
Ellis scored a career-high 20 points for the Miners to lead four players in double figures. Khan added 15 points, while Johnson finished with a season-high of 12 and Jackson with 10.
UIndy's Reece Cheatham led all scorers in the game with 25 points as the Greyhounds also had four players in double figures.
Missouri S&T held a huge rebounding advantage in the game of 37-23 – led by
Michael Nesbitt (Evansville, Ind./LaLumiere School) with eight – and shot 48.1 percent for the game.
The Miners will return home to face Quincy Thursday in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Billy Key Court.
