Box Score (Rolla, Mo.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miner women's soccer team snapped its four-game losing streak by holding off the Maryville Saints for a
1-0 win on Sunday in Rolla. S&T had limited chances, but was able to capitalize on the most important one.
Maryville (2-6-3, 1-4-3 GLVC) controlled play in the opening 45 minutes outshooting the Lady Miners (5-5, 3-5 GLVC) 6-1.
Madison Gibler (Kansas City, Mo./Staley) made a couple of big saves including a diving one in the 11
th minute to deny a Saints goal.
S&T got its first shot on goal in the 48
th minute.
Kendra Wood (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) played a corner kick inside the 18-yard box to
Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ) who headed it to
Kendall Fitzpatrick (Houston, Texas/Memorial ). Fitzpatrick then headed it over the outstretched of the goalkeeper for her first career college goal.
Maryville created some chances over the next 20 minutes but couldn't get anything on goal. In the final 20 minutes the Saints threw everything at the Lady Miner defense. Maryville's best chance to tie the game came in the 74
th minute. After a handball was called in the penalty box Jung took the penalty kick and sailed it wide of the left post. The Saints had one more chance more than a minute later but Gibler denied the shot to preserve her second shutout of the season.
Maryville finished the contest outshooting S&T 13-4 and 4-3 in shots on goal. The Lady Miners were whistled for 23 fouls to just 14 for the Saints. Maryville also had the edge in corner kicks 6-2.
S&T hits the road next weekend traveling to Lebanon, Ill., to take on GLVC newcomer McKendree at 5 p.m.
