(Springfield, Mo.) -
Kendra Wood (Rolla, Mo./Rolla)'s goal in the 108th minute gave the Missouri S&T Lady Miners a 2-1 double OT win over Washburn on Sunday in Springfield, Mo. It's the first time the Lady Miners have started a season 2-0 since 2003 when they opened with three straight wins.

Washburn (0-2) dominated play in the opening half outshooting S&T by a 10-1 margin and had several good chances. Madison Gibler (Kansas City, Mo./Staley) made four saves in the opening frame. The Lady Blues broke through in the 29th minute. Tia Stovall made a run along the touch line and passed the ball to Caysie Beetley just inside the top of the box. Beetley knocked it past Gibler from 17 yards out.

Washburn nearly added to its lead in the 35th minute. Leah Talley was able to get behind the defense and around Gibler and appeared to score the second goal, but Sabrina Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) trailed the play and knocked it off the line to keep it a one goal difference.

The Lady Blues put six of their 10 shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes while S&T's lone shot on goal came from Sammy Minea (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley North ).

The Lady Miners started to get some chances in the second half, but couldn't finish them until the 70th minute. Kesley Salzman made a great run into the box and played it back to Suzy DeWael (McCordsville, Ind./Mt. Vernon High School) who blasted inside the right post from 15 yards out for the equalizer. Neither side threatened the rest of the period or in the first overtime period.

Wood's goal came off a corner kick with 2:34 left in the contest. She lined up a corner kick from the far side of the field and lifted a shot that hit off the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the line before the keeper could knock it out for the game winner.

Washburn finished the contest outshooting S&T 13-8 but took only three of those shots after halftime. Salzman and DeWael each had two shots in the contest. Gibler finished with seven saves. S&T finished with the edge in corner kicks 7-6.

The Lady Miners return to action this Friday traveling to Somers, Wisc., to take on Wisconsin-Parkside beginning at 3:30 p.m.
