(Rolla, Mo.) - The Missouri S&T Lady Miner soccer team continued its hot start to the 2012 season downing the Saint Joseph's College Pumas 2-0 on Friday evening at the S&T Soccer Field. It's the first time since 1999 that the Lady Miners have started a season 4-1.

S&T (4-1, 2-1 GLVC) wasted little time in breaking on top scoring 2:10 into the game. Kimberly Ekholm (Houston, Texas/Cy-Springs ) won a ball in the midfield and played it ahead to Kelsey Salzman (Blue Springs, Mo./Notre Dame de Sion). Salzman then passed it off to Kirstin Kurilla (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) and she buried it on a breakaway from 18 yards out inside the left post. SJC (1-4, 0-3 GLVC) had some attempts in the first half but the Lady Miner defense stood tall to keep its clean sheet. Kurilla nearly give S&T a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute. After a great run by Salzman on the end line she fed it to Kurilla who tried to beat the keeper near post, but the keeper punched it away at the last second keeping it 1-0.

The Lady Miners outshot Saint Joseph's 6-4 in the opening half. The Pumas were whistled for seven fouls against five for S&T.

The Lady Miners dominated the second half but were unable to put the game away until the 68th minute. Katelyn Aladin (Olney, Ill./East Richland) came on as a sub and scored on a loose ball in front of the net which she chipped over the keeper. Ekholm got her second assist of the night on the play. S&T finished with an 11-4 edge in shots in the second half and put six of those on goal. The Pumas Amanda Volk made five saves in the second half to prevent the margin from being bigger.

The Lady Miners had 17 shots in the game and were led by Kurilla, Colleen Lewis (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall Academy) and Suzy DeWael (McCordsville, Ind./Mt. Vernon High School) with three apiece. Kaitlyn Deister (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy) started in goal and made four saves to record her second consecutive shutout and fourth of her career.

S&T is back in action on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Indianapolis at the S&T Soccer Field at 12 p.m.
