Box Score (Springfield, Mo.) - Kelsey Salzman (Blue Springs, Mo./Notre Dame de Sion)'s breakaway goal in the 87th minute proved to be the difference in Missouri S&T's season opening win over Wayne State (Neb.) 1-0 on a rainy Friday evening in Springfield, Mo. It was the first season opening win for S&T since 2008 when it defeated Ashland 3-1 on the road.
The Lady Miners (1-0) had some chances in the first half but were unable to get anything frame. They limited the Wildcats chances until late in the stanza, but their goal was never seriously threatened. WSC outshot S&T 5-4 in the frame and had the only shot on goal. Each side took a corner kick.
The second half was more of the same until the 87th minute.
Sammy Minea (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley North ) won a loose ball in the midfield and passed it up ahead to Salzman who ran it down and put it inside the left post from the right side of the penalty box from 18 yards out. Wayne State had a chance to tie it as the game was winding down but Josie Brown's shot was stopped by
Madison Gibler (Kansas City, Mo./Staley) to preserve the shutout.
The Wildcats outshot S&T 8-6 for the match with half those shots being on goal. Gibler stopped four shots on the evening while Salzman registered four of the Lady Miners six shots.
S&T will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when it takes on Washburn University at 12 p.m. in Springfield, Mo.
