5/6/2012 6:22:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROLLA, Mo. – Repeat after me…Missouri S&T is the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division champion.

The Miners captured their second straight division title Sunday afternoon on their home turf, bouncing back from a 3-1 opening game loss to Maryville University to blank the Saints 5-0 in the nightcap at the S&T Baseball Field.

After struggling offensively throughout game one and much of game two, the Miners finally broke loose in the late innings of the second game to give themselves some breathing room and complete their second shutout of the four-game series against Maryville to finish 20-9 in the GLVC.  The 19th-ranked Miners stand at 31-12 overall as they also broke their single-season win record with the second game victory.

S&T broke on top in the nightcap in the third inning when Jake Brower (Wentzville, Mo./Timberland) singled to open the frame and Kyle Rich (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) reached on an error.  Following a sacrifice bunt, Clint Wobbe (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) singled through the left side of the infield to score Brower with the first run of the game.

The Miners' Kyle Robertson (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) held the Saints scoreless on two hits over the first five innings before turning the game over to the bullpen.  Ian Smith (Wichita, Kan./Wichita Independent) set Maryville down in order in the sixth, then pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh as he got Colby White to fly out to shallow right and Mike Wilkinson to ground out to first to end the threat.

S&T added onto its lead in the seventh when Will McCord (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman HS) executed a successful squeeze bunt to score Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage), then it tacked on three more in the eighth to pad its lead.

In the eighth, Josh Caffrey (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) and Michael Lockett (O'Fallon, Mo./Timberland) got back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with one out.  Lockett then broke for second and got into a rundown, at which point Caffrey took off for the plate and scored as the throw arrived to make it 3-0.

Reed Brown (Rogers, Ark./Heritage) followed with a hit to score Lockett and Rich drove in the third run of the inning with an opposite field single that scored Brown.

Nolan Korn (Cedar Hill, Mo./Northwest) pitched the final two innings to save the win for Robertson, who improved to 6-2 on the season.

In game one, the Miners scored in the third on an RBI groundout by Lockett, but the Saints tied the game in the fourth on an RBI double by White.

Two innings later, Maryville took the lead when Bob Miller doubled down the right field line to score Kyle Kinyon and White.  S&T got its first two hitters on base in the bottom half of the inning, but those runners were stranded as was a runner in the seventh.

Chris Bowe (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) took the loss for S&T, falling to 2-2 on the year.  Andy Hall (Rolla, Mo./Rolla HS), one of six seniors playing in their final home game on Sunday, had two of the Miners' three hits in the opener.

Missouri S&T is scheduled to play a single game Tuesday at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, then will head to Evansville, Ind., to play in the GLVC Tournament beginning on Thursday.  The Miners will play in a first round game at the University of Southern Indiana against an opponent to be determined.
