ROLLA, Mo. – It could be a passing of the torch weekend in some fashion at the Missouri S&T Baseball Field, as the Miner baseball team will attempt to draw closer to clinching the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division title in a home series against Maryville University with members of the 1972 Miner baseball team on hand.
The 1972 Miners, the first team in the history of the program to reach the NCAA Division II Tournament and winners of the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship, will be honored prior to the opening game of the series between the Miners and Maryville. The pre-game ceremony will take place at 11:40 a.m., at the field and members of that team will throw out a ceremonial first pitch prior to the first game of the doubleheader at 12:15 p.m.
Missouri S&T and Maryville will play another twinbill on Sunday at noon, with the six Miner seniors to be honored prior to their final home games at 11:40 a.m.
Heading into the weekend, the Miners lead the GLVC West with a 17-8 record (28-11 overall). S&T leads Drury by one game and Rockhurst by a game and a half heading into the final weekend of conference play. Drury will play a make-up game with Maryville on Friday at the S&T Baseball Field at 3:45 p.m., then faces Missouri-St. Louis four times over the weekend to wrap up its schedule.
Rockhurst will close with a four-game series at home against Illinois Springfield and Quincy, who is two and one-half in back of the Miners, plays a four-game set at William Jewell this weekend.
Maryville enters Friday's single game with Drury at 14-30 overall and 10-21 in the GLVC, but did pick up a victory in one of its three games against the Panthers last weekend.
Admission is free for all four games this weekend.
