SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The four-game winning streak posted by Missouri S&T's men's basketball team came to a halt Thursday night as Drury used a 16-0 run midway through the contest to break the game open and post a 69-40 victory over the Miners at the O'Reilly Family Events Center.
The loss, the first for the Miners since Feb. 4, leaves Missouri S&T as the No. 11 seed for the SCHEELS GLVC Tournament that opens Sunday. S&T will open play away from home against No. 6 seed Kentucky Wesleyan in a 3 p.m. game in Owensboro, Ky.
The Panthers got the jump on the Miners early, particularly from three-point range as they got a trio of three-pointers from Alex Hall in the first six-plus minutes to take a 15-6 lead. The lead increased to 11 moments later and stayed in the range of nine to 14 points for a majority of the opening half.
S&T closed the lead to 12 after a basket by
Tommy Pelczynski (Nashville, Ill./Nashville) with exactly two minutes to play in the half, but Drury scored the final five points of the opening half to take a 38-21 lead to the locker room. The Panthers' run continued through the first six minutes of the second half as Drury posted 11 straight points to open the period and take its largest lead of 28 points before
Julian Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) knocked down a pair of free throws.
The Miners (7-19, 6-12 GLVC) were led by Pelczynski with nine points and
Filmore Bouldes (Romulus, Mich./Romulus) with seven. S&T shot just 27 percent from the floor on the night and made only two of its 13 attempts from three-point range.
Meanwhile, Drury (16-10, 10-8 GLVC) got 18 points from Hall and 16 from Brandon Lockhart in the victory. The Panthers shot 44 percent and connected nine times from long range, while outrebounding the Miners 45-25.
